On the other hand there are people who, having made arrangements to visit family members elsewhere, have been left with no Christmas food in and face a panic in the supermarkets to get something in.

No he hasn't. The promise was for tariff free frictionless access to the single market - 1246 pages are about creating friction and erecting barriers that were not there previously. As those pages are studied the flaws will be exposed - doesn't matter now the deed is done but I strongly suspect any political capital gained will be short lived when the impacts become clear for fishing communities, would be ERASMUS students hopes are dashed and the prices on imported goods rise.
