Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Marvellous

Yay! Let’s get this worldwide!

When are are going to stop giving certain politicians a free ride because they say the right things on camera?
So the article, the one I found anyway, says the top 10 in that was filled be Norway, Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Denmark, Finland, Spain - maybe all their leaders deserve a “free ride” instead?
Ardern did say those outcomes were more a reflection of the previous administration’s decisions - which admittedly you would expect her to say, but it’s doesn’t mean she’s wrong. She has been in power since 2017, so it’s a valid criticism I guess. Says her govt has invested over $3.5bn on addressing child poverty.
Just trying to add some context to your post mate

Of course she’s going to say that.

Every administration in the history of politics that falls short blames the previous one.

The bottom line is, she’s been in power 3 years, which is an entire term there and has failed on the child poverty front, don’t take my word for it, UNICEF have condemned the country, after a full term.

Yet, because she says the right things, people want her to run the entire world? I know we’re in the era of Trump and “get Brexit done” and people like a persona rather than actual results but the left are also guilty of ignoring the facts to make themselves feel better.

She’s spent $3.5bn in 3 years? The Tories spend £12bn a year on average in our country. Of course they have a far greater population to deal with but that’s £1.25bn when converted. The Tories spend £12bn a year x3 = £36bn. So the UK government, you know the Tories, have spent over 30x on child poverty than Ardern has in her term.

We have a population 13x bigger than them but spend 30x more on child poverty through public spending.

She’s overrated.

I’m not necessarily disagreeing with your conclusions there, I don’t know enough about her tbh, it was just that your post prompted me to look it up, as it goes against what we might expect from NZ as a country, regardless of left or right wing.
To clarify on those numbers, the Guardian article I was reading quoted 3.7 billion US dollars (5.5 billion NZ dollars), but it didn’t specify over how long. Where is that figure that UK govt spends 12 billion pounds a year on combating child poverty from? To be clear I’m not doubting you, I just had no idea our government had a programme like that.

I’m not necessarily having a go at her, she’s done a decent job with Covid, albeit with a population smaller than Scotland, over two separate islands equal to the size of Britain together. But she acted quickly and promptly.

She’s ensured that issues with the indigenous people are appropriately looked at.

That said, she’s not perfect and she’s got a far easier job than leading other nations, just annoys me to see people fawning over her, when she’s allowing for exactly the same thing, that the Tories get hammered for and quite rightly.

There’s no excuses for not ending child poverty in first world countries and she should also cop for it. The figures are from Gov.uk after a Google search.

It’s not a right vs left wing argument as far as I’m concerned and I’m close to the centre anyway. I blame Johnson just as I blame Ardern, although we need being British it’s my place to blame him more.

Anyway, this has nothing to do with AOC, so let’s move on.

Check your facts. The data on which the UNICEF report was based covered the period 2008 to 2017. Before she even took office.

I don’t want to keep going on mate, as this is the AOC thread, I’m going to tag you in the Ardern thread now, with the part of the article that’s important to her term.

In short, I really did check my facts.

We failed too then according to the report you referenced.

Yep precisely.

Its a shame people still promote the very ordinary, if not below par, because they say things they agree with.
I kind of agree but you know I have a lot of time for Jacinda and what she is trying to do re politics round wellbeing outputs rather than economic ones. Its difficult to know exactly when the data from that report is taken. It can be as far back as 2016 for the (for example) poverty information so lets see what happens in the next couple of years. I like OAC too and its hardly surprising that both of them get a good press. Both being young, open and refreshingly honest in their views. They have achieved a hell of a lot less than other world leaders like Merkel and the South Korean lady, but maybe their time will come.
