All Time Top 1100 Albums (Aerosmith - Big Ones) P265

Sorry BH been a bit busy, I was already a fan of ‘The Band’ so although I hadn’t heard the this album I was familiar with a number of the songs. For me they were the original’Americana‘ band, the songs , the musicianship and the vocals especially
Levon Helms and Richard Manuels are first rate.
I have now listened to ‘Music from the Big Pink’ which is rated as their finest hour but I’m in agreement with Rob this is better.
The best album to show case their talents is IMO ‘The Last Waltz‘ it really shows what a great band they were.

Anyways

8/10 for me

That's whats so great about the random nature of this thread. I know of The Band but would never have listened to this album if I wasn't "forced" to. It's a great discovery that has kept me entertained this week. If I don't play it again in the future, at least I've picked up a bit of knowledge about an important band in the history of the type of music that I enjoy. But I'm pretty sure that at the very least, "King Harvest" will get a place on future playlists.

Rollicks along pleasurably enough but I'm in no position to give this a thorough going over. You can hear why these were so influential on so many bands. Indeed the record on the other thread is another countrified take on deconstructing/reconstructing the South with a very different look at history, mythos and nostalgia.

Anyhow this a 6/10 on first listen -- it sounds just fine but doesn't speak to me in any meaningful way. "Cripple Creek" was always a catchy one, and "Dixie Down" too. I enjoyed "Look Out Cleveland" and "King Harvest" especially as well.

But in all honesty I'm growing really weary of records from the 60s now and am leaning into "The Decline of Western Civilization" (the first one -- "Hey, how come they let all you long-hairs in here tonight? This is 1980. Can't you afford a fucking haircut?") to clear my head of cobwebs and bong resin. Hopeful our random generator is going to get out of its current hazy old funk and offer up something sprightly with a BPM count over 100.

Fantastic band Fantastic album. In my opinion The Last Waltz which I watched again recently has to be one of the best concert films of all time. Underated 3rd album Stage Fright is definitely worth a listen as well. This should be near the top of the board no question so 9/10 for me.

On another note on the "who's always looked old" thread Levon Helm always looked old

Cheers Blues! Just the 12 votes in a busy Music schedule on the forum toppled with some virus going around - It's understandable not everyone has the time to listen to some 60's Americana folk! but still, we march on and despite the low turn out 'The Band' scores very strongly with a quarter of the vote giving it a 9!

The Band / The Band
