Remain in Light is the fourth studio album by American rock band Talking Heads, released on October 8, 1980 by Sire Records. It was recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas and Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia between July and August 1980 and was their final album to be produced by Brian Eno.

Following the release of Fear of Music in 1979, Talking Heads and Eno sought to dispel notions of the band as a mere vehicle for frontman and songwriter David Byrne. Drawing influence from Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, they experimented with African polyrhythms, funk, and electronics, recording instrumental tracks as a series of looping grooves. The sessions incorporated a variety of side musicians, including guitarist Adrian Belew, singer Nona Hendryx, and trumpet player Jon Hassell.

Byrne struggled with writer's block, but adopted a scattered, stream-of-consciousness lyrical style inspired by early rap and academic literature on Africa. The artwork was conceived by bassist Tina Weymouth and drummer Chris Frantz, and crafted with the help of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's computers and design company M&Co. The band hired additional members for a promotional tour, and following its completion, they went on hiatus for several years to pursue side projects.

Remain in Light was acclaimed by critics, who praised its sonic experimentation, rhythmic innovations, and cohesive merging of disparate genres. The album peaked at number 19 on the US Billboard 200 and number 21 on the UK Albums Chart, and spawned the singles "Once in a Lifetime" and "Houses in Motion". It has been featured in several publications' lists of the best albums of the 1980s and of all time, and is often considered Talking Heads' magnum opus. In 2017, the Library of Congress deemed the album "culturally, historically, or artistically significant", and selected it for preservation in the National Recording Registry.

Here we go, review No 1 and a interesting album to kick start the Top 1000 and glad to have this one as i've always liked Talking Heads singles but never really known what they are about.
despite many listens it is 'Once In A Lifetime' that just completely stands out from the rest - it surely ranks as one of the greatest and most memorable hits ever recorded, it's such a experimental and unique track but still retains a pop element (there is a brilliant 10 min video on how this single was wrote and how it was inspired by Afrobeat music (15) How the Talking Heads wrote "Once in a Lifetime" - YouTube) , 'Houses In Motion' is another Afrobeat inspired track and is very good and also enjoyed 'Crosseyed and Painless' -
Brian Eno was clearly a massive help for this album, there is quirky lyrics and funk all the way through - perfect for frontman David Byrnes stage presence.
it's a fun, dark, unique set of songs - no doubt a massive influence for many new wave bands, but i did struggle to sit through a few tracks.

This placed 227 out of the Top 1000

Got this one!! Some great songs.
True fact: the Overload was Talking Heads attempt at sounding like Joy Division...even though they hadn't actually heard them! They based it on what they read about Joy Division in the reviews and how the imagined they sounded.
Good thread...keep it going.

First four songs are 10/10, the best they ever did out of a lot of quality stuff. After that it devolves a bit (though Seen And Not Seen has a super interesting lyric) but still my fave of all their records, just nodding out More Songs About Buildings and Food.
