Multiple, multiple independent sources show it was after an old firm game in 1998. He was fined £20k by the former club and £40k by the SFA

The famous picture of Gazza playing the flute was during a Euro tie. Pretty sure it’s Steau Bucharest

The incident you’re referring to was he did it in front of Rangers fans while warming up at Parkhead.

Alexis Michaelochenko (sp) also did it. Funnily enough no one seems to remember that. Again he was set up by team mates

How thin skinned do you have to be to be offended by someone mimicking playing a flute? He’s not even holding it properly which I find more upsetting. He could have at least held it right!!

Compare that to Boruc antics which we simply laughed off and mocked him back. Compare that to Leigh Griffiths behaviour. Kicking a flare into a stand full of supporters is a tad worse I’d say. Standing on stage at a fundraiser for the PIRA and singing songs celebrating that murderous gang is far worse.

There have been many far worse than Gazzas harmless high jinks.

If you are offended by that I’d suggest you’re the bigot. I’d suggest you’re the problem and not an Englishman who has no interest in bigotry

Some people just like to be offended. These are the same people that hate their own countries flag. The same people that boo their own national anthem. The same people that sang sickening songs after The Queen died. The same people whose club are the only club in Britain that refuse to have a poppy on their strip. They support a club who allowed a Pro IRA group to use their stadium in a video

But they are deeply upset that someone mimicked playing a flute

Flute bands are synonymous with loyalist/protestant marching bands in Northern Ireland in particular, but also in pockets in Scotland. So; to do the celebration he did in an old firm game, against a team who who's fans would see themselves as strongly catholic/republican could (repeat, could) be seen as provocative.

I'm sure Google or Wikipedia can add some more meat to the bones of the basics I've mentioned above.

I had forgotten about the incident you refer to. No Celtic fans , or a very very few, saw him do it. Some photographers pictured it and the usual mock offended jumped on the bandwagon.

Many Republican bands play flutes.

Yes; I'm aware of that. But if you ask most people, with a basic grasp of the two cultures in the North, who they'd associate flute bands with, I think a majority would say the loyalist tradition. Anyway; this thread is in danger of being derailed (for which I'm partly responsible, apologies for that). So let's try to get back to the subject of the thread, please.

That’s fine but this one incident highlights the way Gazza was targeted by the media more than any other of that time. People actually do believe what they read in the media.

Gazza was a great player. His second goal against Aberdeen to win the league is often overlooked but it showed his power , pace , composure. Not bad for a guy who many believe he was past his best! His team mates at the time all say he was one of the best , if not the best, trainer at the club.

The great Rino Gattuso started at Rangers. He arrived at Rangers with nothing to his name. Gazza , who could speak Italian, took him under his wing. He took him into the City centre and told him the club had given him a cheque to buy whatever clothes he needed. Gazza told him it was a signing bonus. Of course Gazza paid for everything out of his own pocket but never let on. Rino went on to win Champions a league and World Cup and arguably the best DMs in World football.

Walter Smith told the story about the amount of times he fined Gazza for stories he read in newspapers regarding his partying. Many times Gazza protested his innocence but was fined anyway. Before a big game for the club Smith decided he’d let Gazza stay at his family home as he had been going through a rough time off the pitch. They went out for quite meal then back to Smiths home. On Monday morning the Scottish S*n ran a story of Gazza being on yet another bender. Gazza wasn’t even angry but joked about it and never let smith forget it.

Gazza has many mental health issues and he must have been truly awful to live with but I prefer to remember Gazza playing in Royal Blue in a great team who dreadfully underachieved in Europe. It is truly awful to see him the way he is now.
