just been speaking to a friend of mine about the Ghana Uruguay match

he thinks the situation that led to the penalty at the end of extra time was a 'farce' and that a rule change should be made to allow a goal to be given when the ball is deliberately prevented from going in by a handball on the line

i can see where he is coming from, not that i agree with him, and we have had a long and heated discussion about why this rule change would be bad/good and why it should/should not be implemented

i was just wondering what the rest of you thought?

Just said the same thing in the official match thread. Definitely think a penalty goal should be given.

how can you ever be sure that the ball was going in?

(obviously in this case it was)

or would you give a 'penalty goal' for any deliberate act of preventing a goal by handball??

Under no circumstances should a goal be awarded unless the ball has legitimately crossed the goal line. If you allow a goal for handball on the goal line then you have to do much the same for a forward through on goal who gets chopped by the goalie. It goes on and on, and before long yer giving a goal for a throw in. Jeez, I'm sounding like those folk who don't want video technology.

Where do you draw the line for awarding a goal for stopping a certain goal? If he was 1 yard off the line? 10 - 40 yards from goal if the goalie went awol?
Nowt wrong with the current rule IMO.

Too many people are seemingly quite happy to change the rules & dynamics of football. It's perfect - leave it as it is. The games lives by these moments.

You answered yourself. Give them a red card too.

A penalty isn't a punishment that fits as the risk of missing is too high.

it would be ok if they bring in "refs" behind the goals or whatever they call 'em, otherwise we'll have the same arguments, was it deliberate or not. I know tonight was obvious but some mug ref would end up sending someone off and giving a goal when its ball to hand, probably in one of our games at the swamp aswell !
