Another Champions league revamp...?

As a cup competition the old format was fucking stupid, and today it would 100x worse. Oh fantastic, let's all watch Real Madrid pummel a bunch of teams you've never heard of 8-0 on aggregate until the semi final.

The reality of modern football is that the best teams in the world are spread across 5 countries. If you want an international competition which puts the best against the best, you have to include the best teams.
and they are best teams because they can reinforce their squads with the money they receive from qualifying every season.

No. Take away all CL money from the top 6 and they still make 100x as much as the champions of a random eastern european country.

The link between getting fans in the door and club revenue was broken about 35-40 years ago, and since then any notion of good teams coming from small countries has been a complete fairy tale.

When getting 60,000 through the door every week made you a rich club, Red Star Belgrade or Dinamo Kiev or Celtic could be european heavyweights, but that's long gone. As long as there's a domestic TV audience, the money goes to the clubs in rich and populous nations.

So instead of trying to relive the 70's, think about the best way to make a competition between the best clubs in Europe in 2019, and you'll get something like the modern CL. It has flaws, it's too long and the groups are too predictable, but it's decent.

Why should it be like that? It just gives you a shit competition that's easier to win and less people are interested in.

The idea that the european cup was better when it was the champions of every country is a complete nonsense, and you only need to look at the routes to the finals of old competitions to know that.

If the aim is to find the best team in Europe, then excluding 80% of the best teams in the world is complete idiocy.

You either have the CL roughly as it is today, or you have a mini tournament like the Club world cup, between the English, Spanish, French, German, Italian & Portuguese champions.

In order;- It does, it is, they are, no it isn't (because of the previous three points) - so its a big no from me.

Group stages are pretty boring now (although under Mancini we struggled to win a game never mind qualify) but I don't understand why any football fan wouldn't enjoy the knockout stages.

Even the groups are quite good overall, we've just had a few duds. Maybe if they reduced it to 6 groups and had 2 best 3rd placed teams go into the last 16, it would concentrate the big teams more and produce more threat of them missing out.

Easy, the champions go in,the next 2 go into the europa league,do what it says on the tin,get rid of groups, make it knockout from the start, much more fun to watch

Every time someone says "make it champions only straight KO, more fun to watch" I know they either didn't watch the European Cup or have terrible memories.

There was nothing interesting about watching Real Madrid or Bayern pump the Hungarian champions 11-0 on aggregate.
