Because when you are announcing departmental mergers in the midst of trying to negotiate your way out of lockdown caused by an ongoing pandemic, save the economy, strike a comprehensive trade deal in six weeks with your biggest trade partners who ship two thirds of your food to you, simultaneously negotiate trade deals with the US, Japan, NZ and Australia, yet still manage to lose a PR battle with a young football player I think pettiness is the next step after hubris.
As for the other 27 European countries obliging them to deal with our choice of no extension to transition during their attempts to negotiate a way out of lockdown caused by an ongoing pandemic will poison relations for years to come. Their own situations will also cause them to be more defensive and less likely to seek common ground further salting the earth between England and the rest of Europe.
Still at least we will have a plane painted red, white and blue. That will show ‘em.
Be interesting to know
1) Was this ever put out to tender as £900,000 seems a large amount for a paint job
2) Was the decision to do this made whilst the Torys were fighting off demands to feed the most needy kids in the UK.
3) Has any form of Cost v Benefit analysis been done?
