Genuinely sad for Brompton, but wondering (salivating) at what price we may now be able to get cheap Chinese carbon frames and road bikes - they are already a bargain even with the 48% tariff!

Of course the customer wanting that sort of bike was never ever in the market to buy a folding bike but let's not let that fact stop tonight being all about brexit killing the UK bicycle manufacturing industry.

At least it's not butter!

Not sure Brompton agree with you. Brompton do produce folding bicycles. They also recently lost a copyright action against a Korean producer of folding bicycles of a comparable style.

How shit are we? The Chinese copy everything and get away with it in copyright cases ( or just ignore the verdict ) and we get pinged by one........

Why on earth would you think that I would think that?

The way these things work is that Frost will have had a significant number of professionals working to him. They will have been brigaded into workstreams and progressing all areas - with him as the Lead Negotiator. He will have been managing the workstreams - each will have their own lead - to achieve the best positions in each area from pre-determined outcomes in a range between Fallback - Realistic and Ideal.

Barnier will have been doing the same but has had the benefit of 3 years head start because he was facing off against the hapless Robbins. That is why we ended up with the WA and the unfettered backstop. Securing the unfettered backstop would have caused Barnier to have to establish a new category as Ideal simply will not have covered it - Utopian might do the trick.

Frost will report to a governance group which will of course include Johnson and others - who will make decisions/give direction against the detail that Frost brings back and the decisions on policy that Frosts requests.

Seemingly the direction from the governance group has been one that reflects resolve in key areas which is what has allowed Frost to be so effective during 2020 and regain a lot of the ground that was conceded in the previous 3 years. That group will have been influenced by a number of factors - and stakeholders and in this regard there has been casualties recently in the ranks that would keep Johnson away from 'unilateral' (aka utterly inept and stupid) involvement and personal decisions.

What I have said - many times - is that I really hope that Johnson 'does not get involved' and I have explained what I mean - e.g. that I hope there are no more examples such as him walking around the grounds with Varadkar - I was/am very concerned when I hear that he has calls scheduled von der Leyen

So Frost will have done all the excellent work in a structured and professional manner, but Johnson is a fuckwit that could fuck it up. I worry that Johnson will bottle it and act unilaterally - not the other way round

You will blame Boris whatever the outcome - simply because there is no good outcome from all of this. You know it deep down. Just can’t admit it and will always deflect blame at others , ‘bobbins’ ‘May’ and now Boris.

It was actually Korean, I should have checked instead of making the assumption when I saw Asian script on the company address. see my edit.

Just had a look at Bromptons site. With their base spec model being £800 and most in the 1-2k bracket for what is essentially (albeit handbuilt/British) a hipster commuter bike and chinese ones already available form MuGuang Co,.Ltd and others via amazon for £160-300 they probably need to consider if Brexit is to blame, or in fact their business model needs looked at. While I'm sure the Brompton is a superior product in every way the price differential may be straining the point.
I think most of us on a weekly basis nowadays buy something that is nearly as good from China for half the price of it's big brand counterpart - this is the issue facing Brompton, the 48% tariff doesn't even touch the sides such is the price difference of their product compared to the Chinese stuff.

I don't make bicycles. However I trust what those that do say. How many bicycles do you make a week/month/year?

Brompton have an issue of loss of patent after 20 years which seems standard, and also that of being undercut by cheaply manufactured stuff from the far east. They have my deepest sympathy, but hey can't really expect anything else, and it's got less than nothing to do with Brexit. They are like Bentley competing with Nissan/Kia.

Yeah right so post Brexit Bentley customers will buy a Kia?

No. What I'm saying is Bromptons market is going the same way as so many others where without the protection of their patent they will be undone by cheap mass production from the far east. The reason I used the Bentley example is I suspect their survival may lie in being a premium brand concentrating on being the very best product. More depressingly they might just be better of licensing the brand or outsourcing to China.

I asked @mcfc1632 for some good news when he popped on here to tell us we were all whinging and concentrating on bad news but he legged it sharpish so i wouldn't hold my breath if i were you..
The good news flows from being out of the EU ahead of the unavoidable integration

I have answered that many times - and provided you with as much detail as I deem your posting style merits

Let me take you back to 26 October.

Why are we waiting, oh why are we waiting?

Bloviating bottler.
You seem to be wearing a cap that fits

I have dealt with this subject with you - to the fullest extent that I intend to and you merit

I have also dealt with/am dealing with the topic of the post you refer to

If you are not able to discern the answer that I gave you on the 3rd November - I am struggling to express how little I care.
