It's a sad fact that many who voted leave did so for racist reasons and I say this as an unashamed leave voter myself. They just did.
The irony though in my opinion is that , again in my opinion, it is the EU itself that is a racist endeavour, borne out of a white European sense of superiority over the rest of the world.
Broken down into its simplest form European immigration policy is one of "if you look like us and speak like us you can settle in any of our towns and cities without too many questions being asked. If you have a darker hue you'll have to jump through a few hoops and the process could take a while. And if out of desperation you try and jump the queue we will leave you to drown on the shores of the mediterranean. We will also throw our massive GM food surplus in the bin before we open our markets to organic African farmers"
One of the better educated people I work with voted remain , in part, because as he so stupidly put it "at least with the EU the immigrants are white"
The answer is to open our doors to immigrants regardless of what they look like based on need and circumstances.
I'm not naive enough to think we'll get this with a Tory govt, or probably a new labour govt either, but out of the EU, in a few years we might get it with a real labour govt .
I live in hope if not in expectation
