Luxembourg PM's press conference - Snap verdict
That was extraordinary. Boris Johnson, the British prime minister, has just been humiliated by the leader of the tiniest country in the European Union.

We were expecting a joint, open-air press conference but, with a large crowd of anti-Brexit campaigners threatening to drown out Johnson, it was announced that the British PM was not going to take part (presumably because of the demonstration, although that has not officially been confirmed yet). Normally in these circumstances the polite thing to do is to re-arrange. But instead Xavier Bettel, the prime minister of Luxembourg, just went ahead anyway, effectively “empty chairing” his guest. At one point he even gestured at the space where Johnson was supposed to be.

And then Xavier just let rip. People often wonder what EU leaders say or think about Johnson in private. Well, now we know. The leave campaign was a pack of lies, Johnson’s talk of progress in the Brexit talk is unfounded, the UK still has not come up with any ideas. On and on he went, with particular emphasis on the point that the UK, not the EU, was to blame for the crisis. It was a “nightmare” for EU citizen, said Bettel. At several points he was loudly applauded by the protesters, because they felt he was articulating their anger.

Yesterday Johnson depicted himself as the Incredible Hulk. As the Telegraph’s Michael Deacon suggests, the reality could not be more different.

Johnson needs to come to the Etihad.
We could bring back the "You're not incredible" chant last used when we played Porto.

Just read the transcript of the speech from Xavier Bettel the Luxembourg PM, for the leader of a country to talk in such terms, shows the utter contempt they have for Johnson on the continent.

We're a laughing stock.

It was...brutal by diplomatic standards. Anyone have a scooby as to the thinking behind getting humiliated by the PM of Luxembourg? Is it *checks notes* to demonstrate how mean Europeans are to us?

How people justify voting for this shower of shite is beyond me. Jeez.

What a fucking shambles we've become.

Johnson just bottled a press conference in Luxembourg because of ex pats demonstrating against him. It didn’t stop the Luxembourg PM ripping Johnson a new arse and tearing apart the Brexshiteers’ stance.

Why is it when we Brits go to work abroad we are expats but anyone comes here they are an immigrant. I intend to be an immigrant when i retire, hopefully brexit will not have scuppered that opportunity for me.

Without a doubt fella this is the laughable logic of remainers on Brexit. 17.4 million is not enough but say 8 million in a election is plenty if the result suits. Plus people vote for lots of different issues at a general election if they lose unless of course a remain party wins then obviously every vote for them was solely based on Revoke alone.

A cynic would claim people are only interested in getting what they want but don’t have the balls to accept its a little bit dodgy morally. They are as self interested as Boris bless them.
This is indeed true - I have an example today where Remainers find it difficult to accept the reality of the policies that they support - and equally I was commending a Remain supporter for openly declaring this/her position and not hiding behind having their 'dirty work' done for them by a 'peoples vote'

People just want the outcome that they want - there are only a couple on here that are that principled to hold higher values. I suspect Rascal is one - I am most certainly not. I want the UK's future protected to a degree from the debacle that will come by exiting the EU - I would vote for Corbyn, Swinson or Johnson depending on whoever provided the best chance of achieving that.

Absolutely astonishing.

Astonishingly bad.

Can anyone still defend the **** on here?

FFS.
Your desperation to be proved right is embarrassing.
If you can't credibly discuss anything that is actually a real issue you resort to building a straw man that revolves around the dictionary definition of the word "discriminate".
Do you actually realise how pathetic it is?
Anyway, in your words, Crack on.
Thank you for providing me your permission to carry on - it means a lot to me.

No 10 spinning that Johnson asked to do the presser indoors and the Luxembourg PM refused which means two things as refusing such a request would be very unusual. One is that Johnson so pissed off his host with his ‘bumbling half wit don’t have a plan but let’s do a deal’ routine that he was told to fuck off or two No 10 is lying.

Neither is a good look.

Yeah Xavier Bettel's speech was fun, as in translating some of the frustrations we EU citizins imho don't voice all that often.

Get it over with pretty pls?

am awaiting the EU bullies line in the Express tomorrow.

not exactly Hulk-like is he?

Thank you for confirming that I am proved right and for providing me your permission to carry on - it means a lot to me.

You haven’t been proved right. You’ve done what you’ve always done and focused on the definition of the word and incorrectly applied to an immigration policy that reflects that of other trading blocs and unions around the world.

No country, union or trading bloc has the same immigration policies for every citizen in the world, therefore nobody is discriminating.

It’s embarrassing you’ve accused me of being desperate to be seen as right and then have posted those last few posts.

So I am more than happy with my choice of words in this case as the situation is that certain groups of people are discriminated against/in favour depending on whether they are from an EU member country or not.

Yeah uh so discrimination in the sense of the Oxford dictionary's potentionaly synonymous meaning "simple differentiation right? With the remark "against/in favour" depending wether it regards EU citizins their rights and otherwise also their obligations towards the EU right?

God you manage a rather intellectually dishonest debate with irrelevant and stigmatory semantics. Can i also ask who the fuck actually cares? I don't think anyone gives a rat's ass about this impression of differentiation in regards to "mutual rights and obligations" within a social contract of that nature. Aka youre remark that the EU is "discriminating" is not exactly a commonly held impression that people care to hold besides a few people on this forum for the sake of having some debate in between silent luls of news, right?

Doesn't bother me too much but i do think youre stuborn and .. euhm ... i can take some enjoyment in the sheer tranwrecks of arguments you put forward at times. (as a way to explain why the fuck i even react)

Can’t even renegotiate a press conference with Luxembourg.
It’s going well.

Try telling that to @mcfc1632 who almost had me convinced this morning that elections were won and lost on Europe way before we had a referendum.

Luxembourg responds.

‘EU diplomat responds to the press conference debacle in Luxembourg. The Brits were told there was no room indoors to accommodate the 130 plus gathered journalists. So it was a choice between allowing some journalists in or doing it with all of them outside and no Johnson’ @ft

The EU also seems to be geting tired with these extensions. I guess the point of the previous extension was to get a new parliament that commands less of a majority and seems less inclined to negotiate? Months down the drain basicly. How expedient would any other outcome than Boris his presumed preference of no-deal be provided an extension would be given?
