Another new Brexit thread

Mrs Ewing and I have partaken of an excursion to Hebden Bridge this afternoon for a small purchase. Unlike Mytholmroyd on that line Littleborough is not regarded as the centre of the universe by Northern Rail so we had a twenty minute wait at Toddy (bloody coffee machine in the heated waiting room out of order - WTF is Marwood up to these days? That's gotta fall into his remit?) Anyway, I digress. There was a display in said waiting room concerning WW1. Apparently, the whole show cost UK a staggering $37 billion, and I expect that was at WW1 prices. I just wondered, reading that info, whether we got that money back or did it find it's way into the Real coffers or a numbered Swiss account. Either way, we should be telling these EU wallahs that UK has paid enough already and they've had the last penny!

I don't agree with that at all.

The people to blame are the tossers that spent the last 10 years brainwashing the Brexit voters. Namely the right wing press such as the Telegraph and the Mail and above all, that utter wanker Farage.

And Cameron for *completely* fucking up the campaign by endlessly concentrating on the (genuine) negatives of leaving, but totally failing to paint a picture of how and why EU membership is so beneficial.

Much of the shit has accumulated over the last three years and tons and tons of it has emanated from Westminster. Had they got on sorting the job out the day after the vote we would only be up to our knees in faeces instead of our armpits!

From what I've read and heard the EU are not for compromises. They want, like UEFA do to City, to nail us down to the floorboards and we have to pay for the hammer and nails! We should have told the Poles in 1939 and the French in 1940 that they should compromise with the German Chancellor, and stand back and see what their reaction was!

The big mistake was invoking Article 50 before the job was ‘sorted’, DE. What you see now has simply flowed from that.

We are being the intransigent ones in all of this, not the EU.

After WW I we along with the other Allies imposed severe reparations and a ‘guilt clause’ on Germany as part of the Peace settlement. What we got back was Hitler and WW II.

After WW II we took a different approach and the Americans gave billions in aid to rebuild Germany. What we got back second time around was peace and a prosperous Europe.

There is probably a lesson in there somewhere.

I think our position is somewhat nobbled by the issue of freedom of movement.

Although not on the ballot paper, it would be wholly disingenuous for anyone to suggest that FOM was not THE biggest issue in the minds of millions of voters (on both sides actually). From the strain on the NHS and public services, to the perceived threat to a "British" way of life with the very visible numbers of eastern europeans (in particular) working in Tescos, Nandos and everywhere else. Some people may simply be downright bigots and others had more rational concerns. But concerns they had.

So IMO it would have been downright dishonest to pretend this did not matter and to enact any kind of Brexit deal which at the same time allowed FOM. And as soon as that red line is drawn, it very severely limits our options.

With both sides reaching a level of maturity to accept that neither group is going to get everything it wants from brexit, but refusing to carry it out or going gung ho is going to be incredibly damaging.

You want a no deal brexit and a crippled economy with issues in Northern Ireland? Fine, but own it.
You want to remain in the EU, creating a crisis of confidence in our Parliament and parliamentarians, forcing the eurosceptics to become more emboldened and extreme? Fine, but own it.

You want a compromise to avoid both of those scenarios? Then accept aspects of brexit you may not have wanted, but are essentially what you voted for.
