Another new Brexit thread

I’ve not spoken to a single leave voter who thought it would be sunny uplands. Most are reasoned and were looking at a long term goals, which I respect.
By the same argument the consequences of remaining were not highlighted. I voted remain for closer ties to the EU, but some voted wanting it to stay as it was. For me the middle ground was a loss - either were in to make it work or we’re out
I accept that many leave voters did not expect sunny uplands.
But on the other hand I think there would have been a fair few who did not expect significant economic disruption or a ' national act of self harm' to which Mazarrelli
referred.
Given that the result was close this could have swung it the other way.

Deal on extradition and intelligence sharing looking more likely

UK close to Brexit deal tying it to the European Court of Human Rights’

Intelligence sharing is already established through various relationships -5,9,14 eyes. The EU have actually endangered our 5 eyes relationship through their own relationship with former Soviet states. Although there are entanglements in diplomatic relations intelligence relationships are often quite seperate. It is within the interests of both the EU and ourselves to share intelligence on crime and terrorism throughout the continent and in no one's interest for this to stop when we leave a trading block. It was always a non story and an attempt to mobilise intelligence sharing as a reason to remain.

So could the EU by giving up a little. Or our own government. What will be will be.

What were the long term goals these reasoned leavers you speak to looking at?

Tbh if the remain campaign had done a decent job of selling the EU rather than just taking the piss out of leavers for various then I think the vote would have gone firmly the other way.

For example the ability to set our own trade rules to protect UK industry. So if we have an area we want to protect we can discourage overseas imports by adding tarrifs. Whilst part of the EU we don’t have that power and would need to appeal to Brussels and then other member states which will have different opinions on what is good for them.

another is highlighted by the tampon tax. For a long time the UK has been unable to overturn the 5% charge but is now able to do so.

Most of the people I speak to are in business and think of the country like one. Sometimes the ability to react quickly is the difference and diverting decisions through Brussels adds complexity and sometimes frustration if it’s not the best answer for the EU and is rejected.

In my view these are outweighed by the benefits of membership, however to suggest there are no benefits of leaving is narrow minded.

So you think the car industry is going to be wiped out by manufacturing leaving the UK or not post brexit? If it leaves then the Japan deal is of no consequence, and if it stays then the Japan deal is of no consequence as presumably they won't be looking to export the same cars to us as are made here?
You are so desperate to sieze upon any negatives that you've tied yourself in a proper little knot there :-)
Like everything, it's all black and white with you, whereas in reality it's shades of grey.

Brexit will cause a downturn in UK manufacturing but not wipe it out. The Japan deal will make it worse. It really isn't that difficult to understand.

It's a bit like when you kept repeating nonsense about not needing lorry parks because there'll be no trade, but then because we're having them you were saying trade isn't affected.

I suspect you're wumming tbh because no one can be that daft.

Fair comment.

A lot of the piss taking was due to disbelief.

The leave leaders were then, and still are, bullshit merchants of the highest order.

Thanks for the lorry parks again. 7000 a day wasn't it? 35000 by the end of week one - minus of course the trickle that manage to navigate the beurocracy and make it over the channel. Probably not a bad thing as I'm not sure there would be enough ferries for the 7000 per day anyway. Also not sure where they'd come from as the UK largest fleet is a couple of hundred - maybe the EU would like their lorries back so they will ease friction somehow :-)
