Another tech question

When using the little mouse pointer touchpad square on a laptop/netbook, how can you highlight and drag some text without running out of pad, if you know what I mean? Say I want to highlight a fair bit, doing it on the touchpad is a nightmare and I can't get it all, or the portion I want.

Dont you just click with the cursor button thing, and you can use the touchpad as freely as you like. If that makes any sense at all to you

Position the cursor at the start of the text. Press the shift key, keep it pressed, then press the down arrow. Go as far as you like.
