Anthony Caceres loaned to Melbourne City

I think when the other A league clubs realise the potential for an injection of cash in their coffers. Melbourne may get a few 'offers' off of the clubs to take their players. I don't think it's unethical. It's a loop hole they are going to have to look at. CFG are acting as a third party. Using Us as a registration vehicle and then loaning him out. We own his rights not Melbourne. But then where does it stop? Could we now sell him to Melbourne and get a profit? Is it very clever or very shady? It's a tough one to call.

I do feel uneasy with how we have handled this, but we wouldn't have had to do it, if their rules were brought into the 21st century.

Pretty much my thoughts. Doesn't sit well with me. Even though the rules to me sound stupid, those are the rules everybody else has to abide to in that league and therefore Melbourne's affiliation with CFG has given them an unfair competitive advantage. Guess other clubs could form alliances with no A-League sides specifically for this purpose if they wanted, but it'd never be quite as tight as Melbourne's with us. That said, CCM were clearly complicit in this too.

Central Coast mariners already have formed an alliance with Everton.

They tried to bring in a young keeper but the league blocked it because they have convoluted rules regarding bringing in young players from abroad as visa spots as it stifles young Australian players progress.

And for those quick to dismiss the $300k transfer as not much, considering the salary cap for each club is $2.6million per season, $300k is actually quite a lot, which Central coast would not have got had other clubs waited for Caceres to quit. These same clubs complaining about City are also getting in players ears to destabilse them to force moves, at least now the club losing a player gets compensated...

All seems a bit unethical to me, given the A-League's transfer rules.

There's two ways of looking at this transfer.

Firstly, we've circumvented the league rules regarding transfers between clubs. Not in an illegal way but in a way that is certainly breaking the spirit of the law and FIFA could potentially look at this for bringing the game into disrepute (though I'm sure our legal eagles would have gone over that first).

Another way of looking at it is that we're breaking a very bad and unpopular rule which was established under different conditions and absolutely nobody wants any more. They believed that this lack of in league purchasing would prevent spiralling transfer costs but like most football administrators who try to control transfer costs, they fail to understand that tey are always a direct result of revenue increases and investment which is good for the league as a whole. The A League should WANT a few clubs whacking out £50m on players, it would be great for the league in general.
