Antoine Semenyo | Considering triggering the £65m release (p13)

Would it surprise anyone if Savinho, Bobb and Marmoush are gone by start of next season?

You take advantage of market conditions, if this lad is available for this price then you have to go for it.
I agree. If a talented player is available on the cheap because of a buyout clause, and he offers an upgrade on what we have, we should be all over it.

I think he'd be a top signing. He's aggressive, strong, and can dribble. His passing isn't elite but his finishing is. The way the league has developed in the last few years, you need to create goal threat from somewhere other than the centre forward position otherwise it's a little too easy to defend against you. I was hoping Marmoush would be that guy, but with him going to AFCON and Doku having become our most important creator along with Phil, Semenyo feels like the perfect signing at the perfect time.

Different profile of player to Mahrez but has the potential to have a similar impact. The other thing, and it's probably a bit tangential, but I like it. Semenyo will come to City fucking grateful that he plays for City. He'll run his bollocks off whenever he gets a chance. By all account mature, model professional, who is still looking to improve. Hopefully it gets done.

He seems like a good pro and works very hard. The concern always when buying someone at 25 who hasn’t played at a top club is how they react. Will he feel like he’s reached the top and get complacent like Phillips or does he push on like say Eze at Arsenal?

The other issues for me is switching from a counterattacking setup to facing deep blocks regularly which can negate his pace. Plus he seems to be playing his best football this seasonon the left. We already have Doku, Savinho, Marmoush and Bobb who can play there. Right wing position is very much open.

City have found a way to use pace even against low blocks by enticing them out and starting in a mid block themselves.

You can find a worry with any player or anything in life if you try hard enough. The worry with "insert sexy Brazilian name from la liga" is that he turns out to be Savinho. The worry with buying a 19 year old is you end up buying a project who never quite fulfils his potential. The worry with buying a player everyone loves and thinks is ready for the step up is he turns out to be Grealish.

It's also worth remembering that when Mahrez came in he was basically a counterattacking player. But he became in incredible weapon for City mainly because he knew how to score goals and did it regularly even when he wasn't starting.

Not at all. Savinho & Bobb definitely, Marmoush I can see getting another year as injuries have hit him this season.

Some on here were slating the board for not buying Eze before he went to Arsenal and that was before he started pulling up trees at Palace.
We now have an opportunity to buy a player entering his prime and people don’t want him because they think he’s awful. If or When he ends up at Liverpool and smashes it, it will be the same lot complaining that we didn’t pull the trigger when we had the chance.
The board genuinely can’t win at this point.

Good post

Semenyo is in the Haaland/Doku/Marmoush mold. Not a perfect fit but can work

Our style of play needs to change. We cant continue to play tippy tappy with non-tippy tappy players. We are accumulating non tip tap players by the drove, but continue to try to play tip tap. It just seems like a waste.

We have 4 major problems right now.

1. Non scoring forwards ( Semenyo helps here)
2. Poor pressing team, Semenyo helps here.
3. Poor passing out of the back and breaking the press.
4. Slow build ups ( too much backward unnecessary passing)

I suppose If we want to chase the Champions league and the League right now. Take the risk, its a good price. But the better long term plan is probably to play out! the season and have enough evidence on Savio and Bobb. Right now neither is at that level. But Jeremy was viewed as not at that level s mere 6 months ago.

Development can spike. Bur we need more goalscorers and game changers

I think this os the prevailing logic. And its one i agree with. As im a big proponent of taking advantage of unusual market conditions.

You do if you think that you need him, and he has satisfied the strategy you have in place, and he is a strong personality fit within the squad. Most of us here are not privilege to that information, and will see him occasionally, and probably only on highlights. I am far more excited to witness the growth and development of the players we have rather than an expensive gamble, and I speak as someone who thinks Semenyo looks a cracking player.

I like the way your summary rightly contradicts your opening.
If we judge in the here and now, Semenyo helps based on what he does for Bournemouth.
It presupposes that Foden, Cherki and others all stay as they are and do not improve.
I consider that highly unlikely.
We are also ignoring the changes in coaching setup and shift in style - it all takes time.

Same people said that Liverpool had a 10/10 summer window and we'd never be able to keep up with them.
It come down to simple things
Do we need that type of player?
The answer is yes and he has proved how good he is in the prem.

As for Liverpool, they bought two average fullbacks, overplayed for a forward and bought a player not suited to their system (whatever that now is)

Nobody was saying this at the time.
In fact, fans here were apoplectic at them getting Wirtz and why on earth were they able to buy two full-backs when we weren't buying one. Then we had the Isak complaints.
There are no guarantees, and joining a club with significantly higher expectations and media attention is a different ballgame.
