Been looking at doing this for a couple of years, its a once in a lifetime type journey, in many respects it`d be like going back in time, anyone who`s done inter rail will understand what I mean but on a far far bigger scale. For me its on my `TO DO` list, and next year I want to do it, friend of mine in building trade was well up for it and can even speak passable Russian but unfortunately the bottom has fell out of his world and has no chance of going now poor sod, i`m still going for it though.......a truly epic journey..

A good mate of mine is doing it right now. Just went on his own.

Had a text yesterday saying he'd fell off a horse in the Gobi desert, must be alright though he didn'y say he was hurt or anything.

how is the horse?

Is that the horse with no name ??

Anyway back to the thrust of the thread, if anyone has or wants to do it(squirty flower) I`m torn between doing the original Leningrad (St Petersburg) to Vladivostoc or the now more popular Moscow to Beijing, going through Mongolia appeals to me but i`m a traditionalist too so Vladivostock is probably my choice !!! and then 2 day ferry to Japan. Lake Baikal on the way is a must for a stop over....

Anyone who wonders what this is about !!! its the longest train journey in the world, 9 time zones from the Baltic to the Pacific ocean not for the feint hearted but a never to be forgotten experience.

The actual train journey (one way) is about £700 but can be cheaper or dearer depends who you book with, then there are flights and other trains and ferries to take into consideration, it can be done for less than £2000 but realistically £2,500 is nearer the mark, its a lot of money but if you start reading into it its an adventure that will never leave you, if your reading this thread and wonder why bother, just google one stop on the journey `LAKE BAIKAL`......then theres siberia, gobi deserts, pacific ocean, moscow, beijing, great wall of china, and most of all the people you meet along the way.

-- Fri Aug 13, 2010 10:55 pm --

Ok the story so far. To fit in with the locals in Moscow, he tried selling eggs in Red Square. I don't know how successful this venture was though.

Somewhere along the line there was a vodka/spliff induced accident that unfortunately led to cabin 12 being set on fire a bit.

You already know about the falling off horse incident, but you'll be glad to hear that both parties are injury free.

As soon as I get the next installment I'll let you know.
