Any news on a new City Stadium?

Sure would mate! I just don't get why are some fans against us increasing the capacity? I fail to see what the detrimental effects will be to our players in having them play their football in the biggest and most splendid stadium in England! The fact that we MIGHT not fill it for some/most games is irrelevant, surely, since it's almost guaranteed that we WILL fill it for some games.

As I see it, a HUGE stadium will reap the following benefits:

1. Increased gate receipts/turnover.
2. Greater Kudos on the club throughout the world.
3. Attract better players
4. Make us the envy of the football world

It's about creating a legacy for the future. Wouldn't it be great to be the generation of fans who were around when Manchester City built the biggest and best stadium in the world? What's there to moan about in that?

No offense, but City are struggling to sell out their stadium as it is. Having an 80k stadium with 40,000 people in it would be detrimental in the efforts to overshadow Old Trafford.

If City cannot fill it as it is, there is no need for expansion, especially considering it is an almost brand new stadium.
Fucking stupid comment we have sold out most games this season our avg stands at just over 46,000(and for a ground that holds 47500 thats pretty good).

Their is absolutely no need for stadium expansion at this present time, it's pleasing to see our stadium packed to the rafters for league games but it's early to talk about extending the capacity - were just not going to find a few extra thousand fans willing to turn up overnight.

I'd say leave it for another 12-18 months and evaluate from there, more importantly i'd like to see more adjustments to the look of the stadium, whether that's putting MCFC across the stands or painting the whole stadium blue!

Can we just get real for one moment chaps.

80,000! Absolute bull****! Sorry for swearing. We would never ever fill it. OT holds 78,000 nearly and United aren't selling out every game anymore. If the stadium is expanded as I think it will be, we're probably looking at 55-60k max. If I'm going to be OTT, I would say 65k like Arsenal's new ground.

Do we need to increase the capacity now? Yes. Remember, it will take at leaset 3-4 years to redevelop and increase the capacity of the stadium. So in theory we won't have the new stadium/capacity until at least 2012-14, dependent on planning, conctracts being awarded and construction completed. By then we could well and truly be winning trophies and getting into the CL each season.

On top of that there is the World Cup bid. If we've got a stadium that holds 60-65k with direct access via the Metrolink and surrounded by one of Europes largest leisure destinations, it doesn't take me to tell you how much extra money we will make on match days. (this includes non City fans coming to watch the match and then going on to the leisure attractions after the game is finished and all the foreign supporters coming over for the World Cup.

I'll be honest will you all, I'm not ITK(sorry hate that word) and I don't know the juicy stuff, but I've followed this Sports City saga from day one and have been privey to some interesting, if limited information about what is currently happening. Things are happening and moving at a pace. However, there is still much to be discussed between MCC, ADUG and other bodies involved in this 'massive' project. There is also alot of legal work to be sorted out. Ownership of the stadium(?), land, rent, etc, etc. No doubt much of this has already been agreed, but much more still needs to be agreed. At the end of the day MCC and ADUG/MCFC both know it's in each others interest to come to a deal as soon as possible. Once this is done work can finally begin on the stadium and the surrounding Sportrs City leisure destination.

PS. As I have already said, the official/public announcement about Sports City was supposed to happen either last month or this month. It has now been put back to Spring of next year.(obviously there are still issues to sort out) Until then can we have less of the 80k stadium, etc, etc, nonsense.

Thanks.

Are expectation levels running away with some people?

We already have a new stadium. There is nothing wrong with it.

What is this news on a new stadium, when we are already in one?

Why do people keep harping on about this ?

We've been in the stadium for only 6yrs FFS, it has the 6th highest capacity in the whole country and we don't fill it week in week out as it is.

Note to poster average gate this season over 46000!

Fuck me! Is this all you can write about
Weve got a manager who s blew £200M on a team that is below Birmingham and going nowhere fast - Isnt life bliss !

That's a really constructive post isn't it. (n/t) If that's all you can add, why bother reading this 'sensible' thread and posting on it?

No doubt once you hear and see the details of the proposed expansion of COMS, if it happens, and the leisure destination, you'll be power wanking like the rest of us. (Go on, admit it) Just as important as the on the field activites are the off the field activities. If we want to be a big club we've not only got to win trophies, but as a club we've got to start generating enough income to pay for new players, running costs and future investments.

Remember, if Plantini get's his way we will have no choice but to increase the capacity of COMS and invest in and/or part own the proposed new leisure destination.

Some of us need to think outside the box and realize what is needed in the longterm to make this club one of Europes biggest. Yes, that's right, Europe.

Some more interesting info. Tenders are now appearing for site works. £8-£13m. Credit to CDX.

The site works are due to start on May 2010 and last for 6 months. That takes us up to Christmas and then into 2011. I would assume by 2011 plans will have been revealed and planning appliacations submitted for the stadium and lesisure district, with a 2011 start on the proposals. We should be looking at a possible late summer 2012 completion date for the stadium redevelopment, just in time for the new 2012/13 football season. Or it could be a year later? Depending. Just guessing mind.

Short description of the contract or purchase(s):

The design and carrying out of works of remediation and site servicing to land bounded by the City of Manchester Stadium (formerly Commonwealth Games Stadium), Alan Turing Way and Ashton New Road. The project will deliver 7 hectares of site remediation and enhancements that will create a flexible platform to enable and underpin future developments. The design and construct package of works will include:

Design of remediation works for the treatment of contaminated soils and water.

Diversion of utilities where they can’t be retained and protected.

Capping of mine shafts and grouting of coal seam workings.

Decommissioning and removal of underground structures.

Reinforcement of utilities supplied capacities to meet the needs of the scheme.

Earthworks to remove obstructions and to re-profile the site to provide a platform for future development.

Highway modification works including junction improvements.

Validation and regulatory approval of the completed works.

Estimated value excluding VAT:
Range: between 10 000 000 and 15 000 000 EUR.

DURATION OF THE CONTRACT OR TIME-LIMIT FOR COMPLETION:
Duration in months: 6 (from the award of the contract).

Time-limit for receipt of tenders or requests to participate:
7.1.2010 - 10:00.

The works commencement date is anticipated to be May 2010.
