Any sensible weight loss advice?

Its a funny thing. Ive tried different things over the years to get the weight off, I cut down on fatty foods and swam for a hour a day for two months...put weight on!!!

I think a lot of weight loss is trial and error untill you find out what works for you, I'm naturally and big fella. I'm a smidge under 6 ft and am at my ideal weight at around 13 and a half to 14 stone. I have worked out when you are heavy sometime running around all day does nothing except put more bulk on you and as muscle is heavier than fat.......certainly all that swimming bulked me up.

I agree that bread, pastry beer and wine are the silent assassin in weight gain.

I was struggling because I couldnt honestly say i was a big fry up sort of bloke or i binged on chocs or eat at the chippy every lunch.

A lot of it is a life style thing and I dont mean going to the gym everyday, that would bore the shite out of me, I meen if you look at the way slim people live there life, its not much different to us fattys, its just, they wont go for seconds at a wedding buffet, they will leave a plate with food on it, the intake of stodge isnt important in there life. If they arnt hungry, they wont eat, if there are Bord they wont eat.

As for my plateau, I recon im going to try and get a sauna every day over Christmas, and try to get a run every other day, see if I can break into 14 stone something by the new year.

Go easy on fruit. The fructose in it (levels vary depending on the fruit) cannot be stored in muscles (like other forms of carbohydrate can)so altho some of it is used to balance blood glucose levels, the rest of it is carried to fat cells where it's stored as fat. Fruit is important for vitamins and minerals, but you have to find a balance.

Saunas will only rid you of water weight....not body fat.

Best thing to do is eat sensibly, and exercise frequently. You'll be fine. Controlling your crabings will probably be the hardest part, but you can cope with that because you know it's only phsycological

tend not to agree with that i am quite slim but lucky i can eat what i like its just the way it is we are all different.when i had a long lay off work due to injury i put on probably 2 stone to much, i tried the atkins diet, controversial i know but if you try it for 1 or 2 weeks it might just get you going in the right direction then switch to what you are now doing

Brass Neck why don't you post your diet up so people can have a look to see where you're going wrong?

A sauna evry day isn't the best way to do it IMO

well i have couscous most lunch times and meat on other days. Then I eat slimming world home cooked meals for dinner. My big luxury is my gin and slimline on a evening and i will often eat pickled eggs, onions, gherkins, chillies with low fat cottage cheese for a evening snack. If I do get a choc urge i have low fat choc bars I guess my only real vice would be my lack of breaky, I just cant face it on a morning. Ive changed to sweeteners from sugar, dont touch bread, pastry, larger, wine. Slimming world recipes are the ones Ive talked about like pasta and veg without meat or chicken stew with out spuds. Its a food optimising regime.

The thing with the Atkins diet is because you are not consuming any carbohydrates, your muscle glycogen stores eventually empty - as glycogen is the stored form of carbohydrate. So that will account for a fair bit of weight loss on the scale. Also Carbohydrates drag 3 times as much water into the muscle cell, so without the carbohydrate, this reaction doesn't take place.

So altho you will be lighter on the scales, it won't necessarily be fat loss. Plus there is the problem of hypoglycemia as blood glucose levels will diminish. It's a horrible feeling when that happens.
