Thinking of uprooting to the island from Manchester.
Total change right out of the blue. I have read so much about ferry crossings, unemployment etc does not matter I will apply anywhere it matters none.
Then I read loads about jobs going if you are willing to work, life is good, only a tiny place, weather and beaches lovely.
Head is mashed with it all so can any fellow blues shed any light on it for me?
To be fair we are pretty adamant that we will be living there within the next 2 months anyway but would still like any input, good or bad.
Is there an influx of foreign workers?
Is there an area to avoid?
Any info would be great.

My best mate lives on the island. He's a great lad but he suffers a lot with feeling isolated. He grew up on the island, so it's not being in a small place, but the lack of stuff going on and people his age (mid-20s). It's a place where a lot of people have holiday homes, so it can be a bit of a ghost town for a few months of the year.

Having been there a few times, you do feel cut off from humanity. If you're driving somewhere on the mainland you have to add another hour and 15 to your journey.

That said, it is a beautiful place. If you're after good walks and solitude, then it's the ideal place for you!

There are a couple of Isle of Wight posters here. One of them is IOWBlue. Might be worth dropping a PM. They seem to have a good supporters club down there too.

I've moved here for the summer as my Dad got me a job in the Henri Lloyd Shop (overdraft won't pay itself off)

It really reminds me of Hot fuzz or the Truman show... everybody knows everybody and it's such a small place.

Ive enjoyed myself this summer but i could not imagine living here full time and through out winter... literally a ghost town.

All depends what you want from life, if you have kids and want to settle down it is perfect, one of the safest places ive ever been.

However i couldnt live here full time, then again i'm 21. No clubs or anything just a lot of Pubs

i lived there in the late 80s for about 5 years mainly in the ryde area. lovely island and much depends on what you want out of life really. it's very safe as regards serious crime etc and is a lovely place for young families as it's only 26 miles long and has more tourist attractions than anywhere else in the uk. locals can be a bit weird but i've been to oldham and seen worse. portsmouth ,new forest , southampton etc are all close by. off there for day tomorrow funnily enough.

My auntie and uncle went to the IOW on holiday every year, they loved the place, once retired they moved down there from Stockport, what could go wrong? They hated it, during the season it was the IOW they loved and knew but in the off season it was a totally different experience and sounded like Roysten Vasey when they described it.

They got 3 nice prisons. My ex grew up there, her dad was a screw in parkhurst. She never wanted to go back. I dont think there is much employment, bar the holiday season. Her friend still lives on the island buts hes loaded after his mum died and he sold the house which was for quite a few quid. I guess its ok if you have money.

It's a great place for a weekend. Loads going on in the summer but after that? It's like a little village surrounded by water. Still...Southampton, Portsmouth, New Forrest etc only 20 odd minutes away.

Would I live there? Nope.

I agree with this lady.

Thanks for the info.
Will be giving it a whirl no doubt and have found a website with info on a supporters club down there so still in touch with the action a bit.
If all else fails in 6 months I shall be back saying I tried and not wondering what if.

Lived in Southsea a few years ago and liked it down there. Used to watch the ferry comin and goin to IoW all day sometimes.
If things don't work out there you could always mooch along the coast to Brighton. Plenty of work there in summer and a great place.

p.s. I think Fratton Park is nearest ground to the isle of wight.

my father in law lived in ryde for years. moved back to manchester a few years back but is now back on the housing list to move back to ryde. as many people have already said according to him it is great in summer. bit boring in winter. not much employment. most of the young people leave as soon as they can. if you like a quiet place it would be a great place to live. if you want nightclubs excitement maybe no good.
