Anyone a fan of folk music on here?

Anybody remember the MSG club in Lower Millgate. Closed about 1971 but it was Manchester's premier venue. They did have some big names there including Paul Simon just starting out. I liked Alex Campbell as well.
I used to go there quite regularly, folk upstairs and a jazz cellar downstairs, I re ver seeing Carthy and Swarbrick a few times and a band from around Blackpool called the Taverners.

Did you know my mum Jean? Or my dad David "Jid" Jordan
I certainly remember your mum,or should I say I remember a lovely lady named Jean behind the bar.
Also crossed paths with Bullock Smithy on occasion but didn't know the members personally.Do you recall a band
called Gentleman Soldier, with the Carroll brothers Rob and John?

Think this is absolute brilliance, best version of this song imo. Bert Jansch great as always and Queen Victoria is wonderful on vocals.

Absolute brilliance is completely right. Incredible vocal by Jacquie McShee. I have played this specific video dozens of times in the last year since unearthing it and keep on, it's that good. She is in my all-time top 3 female singers with Aretha Franklin and Elizabeth Fraser.

Yes, that was my mum. Unfortunately mum passed away in 2016. I remember the name Gentleman Soldier yes.

I've not read all 18 pages so apologies if this name has been mentioned.

Mike Canavan. A folk singer in his own right who also wrote a lot of his material. He wrote, for example, 'The Knocker Upper Man' and 'John Willie Lees'. He was a teacher in Rochdale and we taught for a while at the same school. I went to a few of his 'gigs' some in a Didsbury pub whose name escapes me now. A good folk singer and a lovely man as well. His wife Pat also taught at the same school.
He sang at the Ring 'O Bells and St Claires.

There used to be a folk night in a pub in Stockport, I think it was the Armoury. Wandered in one night, never been before, it was just a small bar with 4 or 5 tables and every one was taking turns reading poems, singing songs and playing whatever. It was great, just wished I'd wore an Arran sweater and a corduroy cap... It was proper purist English folk stuff...It had fnyaarrs at the end of every song and most songs had at least one reference to cider.

Recently come across Fenne Lily. She’s very good.

I remember seeing a folk group at my golf club once and they sung a great song about Manchester slum house clearings. The song was about a old woman who lived in inner city Mcr and was being made to move to a new house in the outskirts of Hattersley. Anyone know what this song could called ?
