pProbably too much of a niche thread for here but just wondering if anyone has one and whether they would recommend buying or not? I’m thinking of getting one to cycle off-road but where’s the best place to buy from? Is second hand worth it or not? How much of a hassle is the upkeep/charging etc?

Don’t get one that had a throttle for speeding up and slowing down. They seem like great fun but are usually cheap Chinese motors and batteries.

I have a KTM (Austrian) mountain bike with peddle assist, meaning no throttle. The motor and battery are made by Bosch.
I can do 100 miles or more on a single charge because I only use the peddle assist when I really need it, ie knackered or going up steep hills.

No more upkeep than a normal bike, except I do look after it more than I did my road bike due to the difference in cost!
As long as the chain and sprockets are gunk free you should have little problem

Lad in work has one, and he's more than happy - in fact he's getting an upgrade. He actually done something to it, which meant he got 30mph out of it. He actually said it was too fast!

He commutes from Trafford to just outside the City centre every day. Said he wouldn't be without the electric bike for commuting.

It’s currently illegal to have a bike that, on the motor alone, can do more than 15.5mph

Yep, he knows that, he just wants to get to work faster. He did say that it doesn't feel entirely safe though! He'll end up in A&E!
