16 league defeats is not too good though is it? plus the shambolic Cup exits.....
No one's claiming it was a perfect season and it's not like we've never had a shambolic cup exit either. But it's been a damn sight better overall than most of the last three or four seasons and hardly "tosh".

Im not comparing this season to the last three or four. All have indeed been 'tosh'!

Just so many defeats against genuinly crap clubs, two first round exits, and more money spent than in any season in our history, make this that little bit harder to swallow.[/quote]

Its all Robinho's fault, don't you know ;)

the point about mourinho is that he left them with a squad that has hardly been added too, the same one that has got within a whisker of the league and european cup twice since he's left.

this is why i'd like hughes to take a few more chances in the market. not everyone will work out, but we risk always getting slightly less than we hoped for from safe bets like bridge and, err. ok, given is amazing. but so is kompany, and he was a punt. oh forget it, i dunno what im trying to say.

You say that there is a fair bit of dross in there but look a little closer. I wouldn’t class the following as dross would you ?

SWP, Ballack, Essien, Robben, Carvalho, Mikel, Malouda, Drogba, Cole, Belletti, Diarra

Having said that I agree about the likes of Del Horno, Shevchenko (more of an Abramovich signing in my opinion), Sidwell, Ben Haim (not the only numpty to sign him though hey !)

interesting post, have not seen his full list of signings before.

in complete contradiction to your comment it actually reads better than i expected it too - Chelsea sold a few of those players at a healthy profit and a few have turned out to be excellent value for money.

can't really hold sheva against him either....

Don't forget Sidwell, Pizarro and Ben Haim were brought in when Red Rom decided not to give Mourinho any more cash.

As I remember correctly, at the time Drogba and Essien were in the process of being signed before Mourinho arrived.

When it comes down to it, if Sheikh Mansour decides he really wants something, then that's going to be all that matters, just as Roman gets what he wants at Chelsea. Others can try to influence him or change his mind, but ultimately he'll decide. That power is what being the owner effectively gives you.
And I also suspect that he and Khaldoon al Mubabrak are the only ones who actually know what will be happening and that everyone else is just guessing.
The only thing about Mourinho though that doesn't sit right for me is that the Sheikh is clearly not one for publicity. Hughes seems like a Sheikh Mansour type of guy; under-stated, efficient and not a publicity seeker. Mourinho is not understated or publicity shy and I have a suspicion that the Sheikh may not be comfortable with that.

I see where you're coming from but I see it a bit differently. Even though the Sheik is publicity shy etc he still gets column inches due to the money aspect, who his advisors are dealing with, the big deals etc...if Mourinho was brought in, I would guess that the attention would shift to Mourinho and might not be a bad thing for someone who is shy of the limelight plus of course Mourinho can handle the press well.

Ballack wasn't Mourinho's signing either.
