Anyone worried?

A mantra I try to follow to the letter mate, if I can't afford it then I don't buy it. I only acquired the ability to pay by card a year ago and I have only used it twice and that was at the football.

Even then it's a top up card that has money loaded into it that I can't go over with.
That’s how my siblings and I were brought up by my parents. I like to think it taught us well from an early age.

I dunno.
Surely every generation says the same.
Exactly this, the difference being now that anything bad that happens is ok the news in seconds. I get why that woukd make the place a scarier prospect to be in, but the fact is that terrible things have happened since the year dot. Human beings are absolute dickheads to each other.

It’s not that deep bro, lol.

Just wondering when the economy was doing great in this country because I can’t remember a time it was reported as such. We get plenty of stories about growth in other countries. The U.K. news for example is currently saying the US economy is doing great.
Why are you so arsed about 'the economy'?
Does the GDP, national debt etc really have that much effect on your life because it doesn't in mine. Interest rates on my savings is about the only direct consequence of the national economy that touches me.

England has been in far worse places. Read up about the reign of Henry VI, for example, or the appalling poverty and oppression post-Waterloo in the early 19th century.

I blame a combination of baleful social media influence and sheer stupidity for most of our current issues. There is an absurd amount of hyperbole around. Starmer is a 'Communist'. Starmer is 'Stalin'. Read up on life in communist countries, read up on Stalin and Mao and you will see what utter bollocks this is.

If I had one single wish from the genie in the lamp, it would be that the British people read more, educate themselves, and realise how fortunate we are compared to a) most of the world today and b) compared to almost all of our ancestors. (Unless you pick out those of your ancestors who were kings, or dukes of Westminster, or whatever.)

Cheers, but my area is grim enough already..

What I find incredible is that you can honestly have some chump eating maccy dees fucking about on an expensive phone knowing where their next meals are coming from complaining about people who were grateful for the moss off the wallpaper to lick when they were hungry and had a stick and a wheel for fun (Slight exaggeration but it still stands).

Certain things are deteriorating, for sure. However we don’t (yet!) live in a war zone or a dictatorship, or under serious threat from drought, famine, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis or volcanic eruptions.

My main worry for the future generation is the impact of climate change but that’s a global phenomenon of course.

You are Laura Tobin and I claim my prize. ;-)

People like Lawrence Fox don’t help. Only yesterday he tweeted that by 2029 we, as a nation, will be under Sharia law. Now me, k can see what he is. He’s a weird looking, failed actor of a **** who, like many before him, had turned to the shit hole that is X to subsidise his income. Problem is so many believe his shit and there the disease spreads. And so sprouts threads like this.

The UK is as safe of a place to live as it’s ever been. There has been and always will be horror. It’s the minority though.

Ah, yes, the Sharia law obsession. A real problem for the paranoid.

They should be at least as worried about Jewish law, which the local Beth Dins have been enforcing for decades. It's about as relevant. In both cases, only believers are bound, not non-believers.

I really worry about the growing paranoia in this country. No wonder mental health services are under siege, and nutters like Fox do not help one bit

I heard a thing recently on a podcast that piqued my interest on this subject of want vs need, ego-driven consumerism, etc…

The person said, if you think you want/need to buy something, just say to yourself “If no-one ever knew I had this, never saw it, never recognized I could afford it, and I could never show it to anyone or talk about having it, would I still want it, buy it, and enjoy it for the rest of its useful life?”

If the answer is not “Yes, of course!” then you don’t need it and shouldn’t waste your money on it.

Same pod also talked about money problems in marriage, and even often for some singles. It said that most financial problems revolve around a car that’s too expensive, a house that is either too expensive to own or too expensive to maintain, and the personal spending habits of at least one of the couple.

He said you should discuss exactly what kind of vehicles, and how often you’d replace them, what size of house, location and mortgage is acceptable, and what level of personal “luxury” spending (restaurants, clothes, entertainment, etc…) every month is reasonable.

If you can get on the same page on those issues ahead of time, your potential for relationship, and financial, security is well ahead of the averages.
Absolutely correct, how many people do you see who earn a wage that is almost the same as the value of their car. Couples earning £50k each and driving around a leased Range Rover worth £102k + costing them 1.5k per month or more, never mind the down payment.

Lifestyle inflation is one of the biggest issues, when people start earning more, rather than saving and building up a buffer which they can invest and grow, they spend it on slightly better holidays, or a newer car etc.

Having a wife or partner who has a similar financial outlook certainly helps, there's nothing worse than having one person in a relationship who spends money like water, whilst the other is more responsible.

Surprisingly it does tend to be those who actually earn above average incomes who have no savings and significant debt rather than people who are on lower wages.

I appreciate it doesn't work for everyone and is obviously more difficult if you only have one minimum wage income but the 50-30-20 split between needs, wants and savings is a good starting point.
