Are we good enough defensively to win the Champions League

Why bother then eh?

We are shit according to you.

You know what I cannot be arsed responding anymore

Shit? Thanks for putting words in my mouth pal. We saw it last season with the players I mentioned looking like the weak points in Europe.

Yes, definitely think we're capable, jeez if Liverpool can get there are we saying we can't?

The season is young the players are learning peps defensive setup this year, I think we're showing signs of having the best defence in the Premier despite that.

Agree with this, we went furthest in this competition when Pellegrini stuck Fernando next to Fernandinho and had the creative midfielder sat in front of them. Having it the other way round with two creative midfielders further forward can lead to us being got at. It wasnt great how we controlled that game last night and it was way too open especially in the 1st half. De Bruyne is the most complete midfielder in the world, he can do both sides of the game in smashing into tackles and pressing, then going box to box and threading passes. I dont know if Pep would change his approach as he goes into every game to win but maybe sticking Kev deeper next to Fernandinho and each of them being disciplined and taking to turns joining attacks.

I also wouldnt mind seeing how we would fair with a midfield of De Bruyne staying deep and Bernado and Spanish Dave playing further forward as Fernandinho doesnt seem to be getting a break at the moment. Playing 90 minutes last night when he will have dippers running at him at 100mph on Sunday isnt the best preparation.

I think De Bruyne could nail that defensive pivot role in the odd game here or there to rest Ferny. He is good enough to play anywhere on the pitch.

Yes we are, we just need abit of luck and the referees to stop being cheating bastards.

in europe we need a combination of silk and steel. i mean we have to have two desciplined midfielders doing the definsive work. having walker in that position is a waste of space in my opinion. and as someone mentioned earlier we went the furthest with dinho and fernando in the midfield. also that year our away game at sevilla were with a midfield more like steel than silk

Not really related to this thread is it?
I'm asking are we solid enough at the back but you obviously aren't interested in having that discussion so why would you come on this thread?
Because you're upset that I thought a challenge was a red card? Or more likely you just want to get into an arguement?

Why isn’t it? If our defenders are not allowed to make a slightly mis-timed tackle without getting their marching orders then they’re not good enough. However if they’re allowed to play with the same rules as the rest of the defenders in the Champions League then they’re more than good enough.

Thought our back line got exposed a few times last night. I don't think Laporte at LB helped but we seem to be cut open on a regular basis away from home in Europe.
Liverpool and Monaco away both spring to mind
I think as long as we have some legs in midfield our defence will be less open to attacks.

I think Fernandinho is looking his age and Silva and Gundogan together lacks energy defensively.

Bernardo does not stop running when we haven’t got the ball, same as de Bruyne, Foden seems to be similar.

I would not be surprised if we went after a DM in January.
Dinho is showing his age and the fact that pep is testing out Stones in that position evidences his lack of faith in gundogan in that role.
