Are we officially in the champions league?

My cousin had 5 bets with 5 reds £100 each that we would qualify for the champions league and this was the last season. But now theyre doing whatever they can not to pay because they're saying we've not "qualified" yet, someone give me some hardcore evidence to say we are!

And I know third place would make it simpler

we've got to play a qualifier if we finish 4th

but we can still finish 2nd at the moment

Not officially, you have to get through the qualification round first which is played just before the season begins. If you overtake Arsenal to 3rd then your cousin will win his bet before next season.

If you count the Champions League Play-Offs as an official part of the UCL then yes.

If you only see it as a precursor to the main competition (like Euro 2012 qualifiers aren't the actual tournament itself) then no.

2 points and 8 goals behind Arsenal who are playing without confidence. 3rd could still happen. Doubtful, but not mathematically impossible.

It depends what the bet was but, put it this way:

The competition is named 'UEFA Champions League'.
The UEFA Champions League comprises three qualifying rounds, a play-off round, a group stage and four knockout rounds. (From UEFA website)

We've qualified for the play off round but have to wait confirmation of entry from UEFA yet, the qualification and play off rounds form part of the competition 'UEFA Champions League'

Simples, unless the bet was to get in group stages, knockout rounds, final or to win it.

So was the bet a) To qualify for the champions league, b) Play in the Champions league, or c) Qualify/ Play in the Group Stages?

Yes we are in the champions league we are just not in the Champions League group stages yet. Ask them if they thought they were not in the Champions league when they had to go through the qualifiers en-route to there 99 success

If I remember rightly last year when spuds "qualified" for ECL. They didn't play champions league anthem before qualifying round. So I don't think they class that as ECL proper.

But if they don't pay up it shows what classless mean bastards they are. But then we all knew that already.
