Carabao Cup Quarter Finals Lineup
The Quarter Finals of the Carabao Cup have been confirmed with all four fixtures taking place live on Sky Sports over two nights.
Tuesday 22 December 2020
5:30pm UK - Brentford v Newcastle United
8:00pm UK - Arsenal v Manchester City
Wednesday 23 December 2020
5:30pm UK - Stoke City v Tottenham Hotspur
8:00pm UK - Everton v Manchester United
On Tuesday, the master meets the apprentice once again as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City - current holders of the Cup - travel to north London to take on former assistant manager Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal outfit.
That game comes after Championship side Brentford entertain Newcastle United at the new Brentford Community Stadium.
On Wednesday 23 December Everton welcome five-time winners Manchester United to Merseyside. The Toffees have never managed to lift the League Cup in their history and will be looking to change that this season.
The earlier game on Wednesday comes from the Potteries, as Stoke City take on Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur at 5:30pm.
Pre-Match Thoughts
Win the Carabao Cup this year and it'll be four in a row for us ... matching Liverpool for the longest winning streak (4) ... it will also be our 8th title in total ... and again put us right at the top as the most successful club in the cup's history (alongside Liverpool again - who have 8 as well).
Win it again next year and they might as well rename it as the City Cup as that would surpass both of those records and we won't have to share them with Liverpool anymore but would become outright most successful (9 cups) and longest winning run (5) ... ok, getting ahead a bit ... for that idea to even be entertained we need to win it this year first ... and that starts with this game against Arsenal.
Looking at other Quarter Finals (see the line-up above) ... I'd take the winner of Brentford v Newcastle in Semi Final please ... actually shouldn't they just say that the teams playing on Tuesday should play one semi and the winners of teams on Wednesday should play the second semi ;) Jokes aside, that draw for Semi Final would be on Wednesday (details of that are yet to be released, but most likely would be just before or after the Everton/United game) on Sky.
We like this cup ... what's not to like ... it gives our full squad game time all throughout the season and we end up with a cup at the end of it almost mid-season ... might not be the biggest cup of them all but it all adds up to the total no. of titles when they say who has won what in last decade etc. And surely the five we have won in last seven years help on that count.
Arsenal aren't in very good form right now and perhaps do need to worry about their league form and games. These are our and their games before and after this cup tie ...
Manchester City
Sat 19 - 3:00pm - Southampton (A)
Tue 22 - 8:00pm - This QF (A)
Sat 26 - 8:00pm - Newcastle (H)
Arsenal
Sat 19 - 5:30pm - Everton (A)
Tue 22 - 8:00pm - This QF (H)
Sat 26 - 5:30pm - Chelsea (H)
Our fixtures are much better than theirs and we also have a few hours more before and after this QF vs their fixtures and kick-off times ... so hopefully they would be pre-occupied or distracted around the tie ... but Arteta knows us inside out (although he might not know our current state anymore as we seem to be very different right now than when he was here) ... but still it won't be an easy game as they showed us in the FA Cup semi final not so long ago ...
Tuesday night, under the lights ... no fans in as London has gone into Tier 3 as well so anyone's game really ...
C'mon City - this is our cup, and long may it continue!
