Arsenal/Wenger - What next?

Arsene Wenger needs to buy some leadership and experience in the Summer and the team is sorted.

Scott Parker should be on his list, they need someone like him in the squad

Yaya Toure would have been perfect for Arsenal, a born winner to drive the team on to trophies.

He is too hung up on technically gifted footballers, who are relatively young

I need to take up the issue of the 'sensible' Arsene running the club in a sustainable financial way.

It simply isnt true.

What he has is created an environment where Arsenal are achieving less by spending less which has inevitably led to a situation where the club are going to have to spend a lot more in a shorter space of time than if they had spent more in the previous years.

It could be argued that he will cost them more doing this.

Transfer fees have ballooned in a way that makes no real sense so if Arsene had spent £50m on 3 players in the previous seasons the same players could well cost £100m now.

And of course they havent won anything in the intervening years either.

Not necessarily. They're still in the champs league despite him spending little and as long as they're in the champs league then they don't need to spend a load of money in a shrot space of time.

The fact Arsenal seem to make a profit every year is proof that Wenger is running the club in a financially sustainable way

Wenger is one of the very few managers in Premiership football who has built his team around a financially sustainable model. I think people underestimate this hugely.
To be sure, they haven't spent money they haven't got, unlike quite a few other clubs, which is sensible. But they also haven't spent money they have got either. Which isn't sensible.

Like any business a football club needs to invest to maintain its competitiveness. Can you honestly say the current side is as good as the one 7 or 8 years ago. Henry, Pires, Bergkamp, Overmars, Vieira, Toure, Keown, Campbell, Cole, Ljungberg, Wiltord, etc? In a few positions it is but only 3 or 4.

Unaccustomed as I am to agreeing with fbloke, I must make this thread an exception! ;-))

Wenger is now hiding behind the fact that he doesn't spend money. He has a vision about how he wants the team to play and the club to be managed... unfortunately, six years of relative mediocrity suggests he's got it wrong.

The last time he had a successful team, there were large parts of it left behind from the George Graham era. A spirit, a culture, a winning mentality, was inherent to the club when Wenger took over. He bought the right players, they fitted in with the players still present, and the blend brought unparalleled success.

However... for the past six years Wenger has had this project in mind whereby he puts together the "perfect team"... young, talented, brought through the ranks... ala' Barcelona. But Wenger is now finding out that the Barcelona Way may only work for Barcelona!

Wenger has now created a culture and climate within the club that accepts failure... that glories in near-misses. And the only way that culture is going to change now is for the manager to go.

Wenger should go this summer, give the new manager £60m to spend, and create a team that plays to win rather than plays to enjoy. Arsenal have become self-indulgent, the players are too close to the manager. Time to change... or to slide.

He broke recent tradition to spend big on Arshavin and Arshavin added a lot to the team in his first 1 1/2 seasons. He's gone off the rails somewhat this season but still has a fair few goals and tons of assists.

I think Wenger may finally spend next season with Fabregas and Nasri possibly leaving, he may have to in order to keep up. Arsenal's defence (hilariously called better than ours by gooney) is shambolic, near Championship level at times, and needs investment.

One interesting aspect to Arsenal's likely transfer dealings this summer is - are they a club big names would consider signing for?

We dont really know because they havent tried to sign big names for years, if at all?

The Arsene way has always been to buy young (therefore cheaper) talent and develop it.

So, will big names want to joining Arsenal? I think the jury is out on that one.

It's far,far too late in the day for Arsenal to change track now. They will live and die by Wenger's policy of investing only in young talent. The Arsenal Manager has prided himself on his title as " The Defender of the Beautiful Game"; but remember; we are told from an early age that Pride is a sin - and his appointed title has been to the detriment of his Club.

Lets be fair to Arsenal this season they missed Vermalen big time it would be like us without Kompany in our defence very hard to replace. He is there leader on the pitch and they missed him big time.

The Arsenal signings for next season will be interesting to see what way he goes. He has brought back players like Campbell back to club to add experience to the squad. Will he do the same again and maybe bring Vieira back as player coach if Mancini decides to let him go. Just look at some of the players who might be up for sale from the sides going down. Parker would be a great signing even Upson for Arsenal both players would add a lot to that team.

Arse would have to fall out of the top 4 for several seasons before the board would ever contemplate firing him.

He makes them elite CL revenues on a shoestring transfer budget. From a business perspective, why should they change? The fans are pissed about trophies but the board could care less as long as they're a financial juggernaut.
