Arthur Labinjo-Hughes

It would be hard as it’s seen as interfering, no one could imagine what was going to happen.

The grandmother and uncle both reported they took pics of bruises on his back. The school reported it. ”nothing was done” Social services said the mother was an accomplished liar.

Yep, that seems to be the impression they got of the grandmother from reading the reports that referred to their inspection. And the stepmother obviously had her own children collude in the lies.

They might have held prejudicial views about the maternal grandmother because her own daughter killed someone, and fairly or unfairly got tarred with the same brush for raising her. I've overheard these kind of remarks made by SWs in a previous job.

One striking thing was that he didn't have his own space of his own, something that the police found when looking with a critical eye but looks as though it passed by the social workers. Whether that's because of effect lockdown changing how inspections were carried out or because it isn't something they thought to look for, we don't know.

But seems like an important thing to look for if you want to establish how a child is living and whether they have a happy home life. Where does he sleep? Where does he play? Where does he keep his toys? Why do those children sleep upstairs and Arthur sleep downstairs?

I am 60 - my Mrs is 58 on age etc I am sure we are disqualified from all fostering and adoption but FFS I am sure there are loads of us out there who can offer a safe haven to kids - my son is gay - he has been with his partner for 5 years - they are solid but probably still not allowed to adopt yet these cunts retained a child...............??????

You wouldn't be just by age, no, there isn't an upper age limit, just so long as you are fit and healthy enough besides all the other criteria.

Lots of foster carers have had their own families 1st, it's usually a positive, though not essential of course as training is given.

Why couldn't your son adopt?

It’s against the equality act 2010 to discriminate on grounds of sexuality.

When I worked within social care, there were carers paid directly through the local authority, (they're not technically employed) or agency that were gay couples, lesbians and a single Transgender woman (the database went into this detail that they have another marker on their bio).

Contact your local authority if you are genuinely interested and have the conversation. There may be other reasons that may be count against you such as suitability of bedrooms, support network or temperament.

You could offer short-term or respite care, could even be kids with disabilities.

As I said if you are genuinely interested, it's worth having the conversation.

It's not for everyone, and even if I was in a position to, I don't think I would want to do it.

There are also private fostering agencies that pay a bit more, and may be more supportive because their ratio of cases to Social worker is less. Foster carers have their own supervising social workers assigned to them.

It’s not the same as just raising your own as you'll be working to the child's care plan drawn up by the local authority social workers.

Children in care can still have contact sessions with their birth parents (unless there are reasons not to, in best interests of child) so there is that as well.

I'm quite familiar with a number of serious case reviews due to the nature of my work.

In my view, the only way to reduce the number of these events is to make significant changes to our society and values, take the population's mental health seriously and make it socially acceptable to seek and accept help and support.

The current approach is largely reactionary and I'm just not convinced that this will ever address the root causes.

Would also help if we actually funded these things rather than constantly cutting back but expecting the same service

I couldn't read the full stories about this case,to upsetting for me.
What breaks my heart further, this is going on right now to some other poor kid, angers and mystifies me in equal measure.
RIP Arthur
