Asda you are t**ts

People, and companies, are absolutely sh*t scared of being accused of racism so when it's a minority, whether that be religious or racial minority, they bend over backwards to be accomodating. In their fear at causing offence they push aside the majority. In most workplaces in the UK the majority of staff will be white, and Christian, so therefore they will want to celebrate Christmas (in fact the 'Christian' element of that isn't even a necessity anymore, people associated Christmas with presents and bank holidays not with Christianity).

Positive discrimination is, in my opinion, just as bad as any other kind of discrimination, if people aren't being treated equally then someone is being discriminated against, it should be irrelevant whether the person being discriminated against is white or black, Christian or Jew, male or female, disabled or able bodied, it's still discrimination and shouldn't be allowed, by law.

One of the things that really bugs me is that a disabled person when applying for a job is GUARANTEED an interview BY LAW if they meet the minimum standard required. An able bodied person can meet, and indeed exceed, this standard yet receive no interview because there are other candidates deemed to be 'better suited'. How exactly is this fair to ALL? Everyone should be assessed on the same set or criteria and if you're good enough you get an interview, and if you're not then you don't. Simple.

As for the Christmas Holiday rule, Supermarkets are obviously going to be busy over Christmas so the fact many, or most, staff can't have time off should be expected. I can see the standpoint that ALL staff should be expected to wrok rather than "All staff apart from people wanting to head to India/Pakistan/wherever to see family" btu that won't mean you get to have time off, just that they don't. I work for an IS company yet there has to be a 'skeleton staff' in still working on projects over Christmas, this means I may still have to be in for a day or two between Christmas and New Year, and I have NO CONTACT whatsoever with the general public.

just get a different job where you don't have to work over xmas .. problem solved .. must be something better than stacking shelves ..

........and the local council has said no fairy lights or singing.

Other shocking news for xmas;

Black cabs are to be reffered to as 'coulorless taxis'
Snow is banned
All flags must be removed from council bicycles
£40 on the spot fine for anyone sporting a red hat with fur and bells on

And finally...all junior schools must serve Falafel for 'december day' dinner.

LOL. Can't believe people actually took this post as anything other than a joke. He said 'snow is banned' for fuck sake! lol

Apparently the word 'gullible' has been taken out of the latest edition of the Oxford Dictionary too.

its all some people can get or do and i fully respect anyone in any job...

There are very few jobs in our culture where you wouldn't have to put in some kind of stint during the christmas period. It's the greedy capitalist consumer society that we live in, alongside the arrogant notion that for some bizarre reason we think we have the right to purchase a pint of milk at any time of day or night including christmas morning, that results in so many people having to do unneccessary jobs on bank holidays.

The top of the chain as well as the bottom also have to work at these times, do you really think that shelf stackers are on the premises without management?
And as far as stacking shelves is concerned I did a stint stacking shelves on the night shift at a major supermarket and it was a great job, good wage, loads of overtime, no responsibility, left to get on with the job, no hassle, great banter with a small team of workers. It was only ever supposed to be temporary work over christmas one year but I ended up doing 13 months.

Maybe it had escaped your attention but we are also experiencing a 'downturn' in the market and some unfortunate folks are being laid off so getting a different job is a hard task at the moment. I've been looking for a new position to 'complete' my education since February. So keep your sneering at people who have jobs which you might consider 'beneath' you to yourself.

By the way if people didn't stack the shelves in the shops where would you get your dinner from? Or do you milk the cow before breakfast, have a steady supply of fresh veg in your allotment and slaughter and then pluck and cook one of your chickens for your Sunday roast?

Rant over ;-P

Calm down dear .. lol .. I have actually done every job under the sun .. from labouring, stacking shelves at asda funnily enough, working in a factory making coca cola bottles, sales jobs and various others .. I have an eng degree, but after doing it for a year, I decided I didn't wanna do it .. So I moved into something else. I'm a recruitment consultant now in engineering, some people look down on me and think I am scum .. but I would never do that to other people .. so my comment was just general and it wasn't supposed to be putting people down who stack shelves .. My apologies if you saw it that way ..

Anyway, my point was if you do have no option but to work over xmas, then don't complain about it .. it's something you took on when you took the job, I was told I would have to take 4 of my holiday allowance at xmas and new yr this year .. to have to not work during that period .. so its cool, but if it's obvious you're in a job where it's impossible to close over xmas, expect to be working then .. otherwise get a different job and don't tell me its stacking shelves or nothing .. because there's loads of jobs out there that people with no quals can do .. even nowadays ..

Apology accepted :-) but the point you subsequently made wasn't what you actually said in the first place now was it :-)
And I agree with you in that you know what you're signing up to when you accept a job regarding working hours. I still maintain that most of it is an unneccessary result of the greedy capitalist culture we live in.

As it happens we have 2 week shut down from a job I love over christmas and new year but I'm well aware of how lucky I am in both respects.
