It tends to be people from the towns surrounding Manchester that seem to be ashamed as i've met loads of people that when you ask where they're from they say 'Manchester' but then it turns out they're actually from places like Middleton, Sale, Oldham etc. Same with the music scene, most of the so called Manchester bands aren't even from Manchester

could be that that the questioner is not really arsed about a grid reference and a google street-view presentation, just wants a rough idea and then move on to something that actually matters.

Middleton = M24
Sale = M33
The M stands for Manchester in case you weren't aware.

So people from Buxton are actually from Stockport? People from Altrincham are actually from Warrington? People from Rochdale are actually from Oldham? Etc. Etc.

I'm not ashamed - but I'm not proud either. It doesn't matter. When I was 5 I thought it was important I came from 'our street'.

When people ask where I'm from - my answer is generally guided by what I think they are looking for. So, if someone from North Korea asks where I'm from, the answer is England: someone from Glasgow - the answer is Manchester, and so on.

Interestingly, in my experience, people from Dewsbury are alone in always replying "Dewsbury" whatever the context of an enquiry after their origin. Is Dewsbury full of taxis endlessly circling, their occupants demanding to be taken to Dewsbury.

Nostalgia is a different thing though. Hearing an accent that then fills your head with happy memories - can't be a bad thing.

Hisaronu? Lovely there, I'm off to Olu Deniz in Sept and always nip into Hisaronu for a visit regularly.

Ashton -under-Lyne born and bred - 1950 to 1978.
(6 weeks in London in 1969, but couldn't stand the place, so came back - still saw every City game though, including night matches at home).
Stalybridge 1978 to 1985.
Woodley ever since.
Proud to be an Ashtonian, Lancastrian, and BLUE.

A few years ago I stayed overnight at a pub in deepest Oxfordshire.
The landlord spoke with a northern accent and I asked him where he was from. He said Ashton. It turned out that he used to live in the Swan pub in Cockbrook as a lad, and used to take my granddad, who lived round the corner, home most nights as he was usually pissed! Small world, eh?
