Lyles is not only a great runner but a wonderful showman, if he doesn’t wind you up.
Shouldn’t wind anyone up, he’s absolutely brilliant and box office. Superb from JHB tonight, she’s so good.

As for Keely, tough night with a rubbish lane and hard race. Won’t do her any harm.

Agree entirely about Lyles, I love his showmanship and about JHB, she’s grown as a runner so much the last couple of years.
Yes about Keely, I was reading about her, the 400 metres runs are about building up speed and stamina for her 800 metre runs.
I love athletics.

Yeah she isn't a 400m runner. She's a middle distance runner who comes from cross country and longer distances as a kid, so having that natural shorter distance speed is probably more of a struggle for her. They will know exactly what she needs to run her first 400 in for WR attempt and doing those 400's is all about getting her to that 400 point in the race and still having the legs to break the WR. Exciting times.

I would estimate she needs to be able to run a comfortable first 400m in 55 seconds, maybe 56seconds if she's really consistent 2nd lap.

Which is why I think she needs to be able to do 50 seconds flat give her a bit of a buffer.

I'd put a bit of last night down to the lane draw and her first outdoor race of the season. I'd imagine her training has her faster than 51seconds.

Bit gutted by that tbh. Had never heard of Werro. Certainly have now though …

Also surprised to hear today Keely is gonna skip Commonwealth’s this year. It’s a gold medal she doesn’t have, so you’d think she would fancy it.

Feel like Keely injected a bit too much pace on the back straight to try and force things but Werro paced it better. Maybe that 400m took a bit out of her as well, but Werro looked incredibly comfortable running that time!

It might be that her focus and desire to beat it actually ends up suiting someone else as a marker/pacer and they steal it. Such fine margins in the 800m.

Should give her another incentive though, and hoping she can break it on home soil.

Werro's been on the rise the last 12 months, ran some good times last year, definitely helped along by Keely's tactics though.

I assume she's doing Europeans so skipping the Commonwealths to prepare, which is a shame but I get it. Athletes in this country are lucky with how many major champs we have.

Think werro has been 2nd to Keeley a few times and not to far away

I'd have said before tonight then Werro is 2nd best behind Keely she's been on the rise for a while but saying that I did not expect her to be able to run that time tonight.

Thanks for that. Yep, it must be a miraculously short period over which her time has dropped by such a huge amount then. I’m honestly not casting any shade here, because I know she has won u23 etc, but that much of a drop that quickly is staggering.

Running 1:54 at this stage of the season bodes very well.
I watched some footage a few days ago that stated that Keely is running back to back sub-50 400m times in training.
That she has a rival capable of running at the level Werro is, is helpful. I just hope that Keely is the one who breaks Kratochvilova's record.
