What happens in Germany on days like this ? The new generations must want to be disassociated with their country's past.

I was in Munich today and it wasn't mentioned

Are you serious? the 70 years anniversary was all over the media/press over here.

Do you really think we would just close our eyes and ignore what happened back then?

Well said mate and thanks for putting the record straight.

I've visited Germany about a dozen times in the last 5 or 6 years, pretty much all over the country. Almost everyone I've met have been friendly, polite and helpful.

Nothing seems to be ignored or swept under the carpet. Even minor low level behaviour such as littering and putting feet on seats on public transport is addressed. Something which is sadly lacking in the UK.

As far as I'm concerned you currently have a country and a generation of patrons of who you should be proud.

I'm sure I was told that, 2hours of nazi history is built into the curriculum every week, I'm happy to be corrected. But the tour guide we hired for the day, said his wife is a teacher and it's compulsory.

I wouldn't dispute that.

Unfortunately, we have posters on here who can't see past the end of their own noses.

"I was in Munich and it went unmentioned".

Das Bild had stories all week in awareness about the anniversary. A lot of the footage we've watched on UK tv has been shared around Germany and the rest of Europe.

It's so sad that some people can't see past the end of their own self important, patronising conk.

Is this the right thread for slagging off Germans? If not please direct me to the correct thread to air my xenophobia. Thanks

The Genocide episode of The World At War is on Sky 537 Yesterday today @10am and again @5pm, for those that are interested.
I saw it when first aired in 1974 aged 10, it's stuck with me ever since.

If you want someone to blame, use the Americans. Coming from an American. Everytime I've been in Germany, I've been greeted and spoken to in English through my broken and poor German. Without asking. I feel bad. They are more than hospitable and go out of their way to help you. A great people that are more than similar to us than any other nation.

I have been viewing some of these testimonies of holocaust survivors. This is one of the best, To be honest I read a book on this topic a few months ago and find it hard to get it out of my head. I guess I'm looking for an answer to the question, why, and there never will be one.
