Doesn’t look the most thrilling game or group on paper but Austria might surprise a few people. Quite a few people have tipped them to be dark horses me included. They were excellent in qualifying, unbeaten in their 10 games, winning 9 of them and therefore finished top of their group. They’ve been in mixed form during their friendlies but in the last couple of years they have shown up when it matters. Janko was their top goal scorer in qualifying with 7 goals. Their star man is obviously Bayern Munichs David Alaba who plays in a much more influential centre midfield role for the national side; he will be a threat from set pieces. Arnautovic and Fuchs have both had really good seasons in the premier league as have Januzovic and Baumgartlinger in the Bundesliga.
Hungary on the other hand are probably one of the weakest sides in the tournament. They finished 3rd in their qualifying group behind N. Ireland and Romania, they then overcame Norway in the playoffs. However, since they were beat 8-1 in World Cup qualifying off of the Netherlands, they have become a much more solid side. Bode and Nemeth were their top goalscorers in qualifying with 2 goals each. Star player is probably Dzsudzsak their captain who plays his football in Turkey, inconsistent but on his day a skilful player. Outside of him you’re looking at Adam Szalai who plays up front for Hannover 96 or 37-year-old Zolten Gera.
Don’t think this is a tough one to predict, think I’ll go for an entertaining 3-1 win for Austria.
