I am trying to connect my Onkyo amp to a powered sub woofer - Its not top end by any means but at the moment the Sub is just switched off

I am using a basic red cable (RCA??) from the Pre Out Subwoofer on the Amp to the Sub Input on sub. Nothing happening unless I play around with the cable on the sub (taking it out half an inch) and then its just a constant loud ouput (not relevant to the film/programme)
Should I be using a dedicated Amp to Sub cable??
The Sub is cheap (£50) so not the best quality but may as well use it if I can just not sure if its the actual cable or the Sub!
