avgrsx.exe - Excessive CPU usage

My computer is running ridiculously slowly. Windows Task Manager shows that avgrsx.exe is hogging over 80% of CPU. iexplore.exe is a regular big CPU user too. CPU usage is shown to be constantly 100%. CPU must be overheating as fan is frequently cutting in. I recently purchased RegCure on line for about £29 (might have been $) and this hasn't cured the problem. I assume that avgrsx.exe is an essential component of the 'free' AVG which I have used for the past three years. Can anyone help?

Firstly I think you've either wasted or been conned out of the money Reg Cure program. The Windows registry does need attention from time to time but I seriously do not recommend anyone to mess about in there, or use third party apps to do this for you. You're relying on the skill of the program coders to tell you what is best for your system. One wrong edit of the registry and you could have a reinstall on your hands at worst, or programs & hardware not working as it should.

Intall the latest version of AVG, which is now at version 8.5. Remove the old version before downloading and installing the latest version. Whilst I recommed AVG over anything else outhere since version 8 they have had some technical issues. I was at a training day with them last week in Newark and put this to them. To be fair they listen and are a very good company. Problem is that with the free version you don't get tech support. Look in your Program Files directory , find the AVG folder and run avgdiag.exe , this will send an error report to AVG. Whilst they may not get back to you they will analyse the fault and fix in future updates.

I think from memory that AVG is very resource hungry at the times when it does a system/disk scan - maybe see if your CPU load is only affected during these times and depending on the size and speed of your system these scans can take quite some time.

The other option, instead of spending money on the reg edit software invest in proper protection and buy Kaspersky Internet Suite - independently proven to be one of the best AV programs out there.

All AV and related software are resource hungry when scanning, there is no way around that AVG pride themselves on having the leanest program out there, they try to make it a unique selling point (along with the free version to promote themselves). So of all the security suites I have used and trialled AVG are probably the best out there.

Kaspersky is just okay, not fantasic but not bad. The UI isn' that intuitive. It really makes no difference what protection you have these days as the web threat is changing. I've been to a number to training days recently and the common theme is highlighted here > http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7955358.stm

More worringly, viruses\trojans\rootkits are being placed in adverts on legit sites with a high traffic count. By the time the site becomes aware of this hundreds if not thousands of users are infected. The whole internet threat thing now is aimed at identify theft, or fraud. That's just one method they have of distributing these programs, It's all about money now.

I tried 'Regcure' last year , on it's promise that it would 'make my computer like new again'!

What it did do was absolutely fuck all!

About a week later after getting shut of it the money was back in my account!

Don't know about the pay-for version of AVG , but the free one will only shift about 60% of nasties ........ it's still probably the best free one around though from what i can see.

Even the pay-for anti-virus programs won't shift everything , but as someone above has said Kasperskys has the best reputation , claiming (and apparently proven) to shift around 98% of nasties off your computer.

not sure where those figures are coming from!

AVG passed Independent testing between August 2008 ~ April 2009 in all testing environments whereas Kaspersky failed in October. The fail was for a false positive so at least it didn't miss anything but identified as a virus incorrectly.
