Away support in Spanish football

I know some clubs in the past have set crazy prices for the away fans, to increase home advantage. Don't know about tonight though.

could easily see it especially with real madrid. just means theres more real fans for messi and co to take the piss out of

I'm friendly with a Barca season ticket holder and I've been over for Barca v Real games and I was initially astonished at how few Real fans there were in the Nou Camp.

I was told that, apart from Atletico Madrid who travel, the culture is to watch away games on the telly.

Only a few hundred Barca ever go to Espanyol at that's in the same City!!!

Spain's a big place. Though there must be other reasons as well, considering the magnitude of games like Real Madrid v Barcelona.

I watched a program about this a couple of years back.
They don't have fans that travel en masse from the away team, what they do is make 'away' tickets available to the opposing teams fan clubs within their city.
i.e. for tonight, Barcelona's supporters clubs within Madrid will have been sold tickets for tonights game.
Maybe explains why you only seem to see small enclosures of away fans at games.
Found it very weird tbh but I guess with England being so small it encourages a decent turnout away, as it is easy to get home again.

Never mind the away support what about the home support?

There must be 100,000 plus supporters in the stadium 95% of them supporting Madrid and the atmosphere and backing for the home team is shit.

So much for all these huge stadia, give me a 40,000 plus stadium when all the fans are rocking.

Considering that an away game might mean a long distance trip, or even a visit to Las Palmas some years ago that it ain´t just a day-trip to consider.

And the fact that the games finish at 10 to midnight (their time) makes it a tad difficult to get home from an away game.

There was only 400 barca fans among 80k people tonight and seen as they get crowds up to 98k at theirs I find it hard to believe it has anything to do with travel or money. Must be that Madrid give them the smallest allocation that they can get away with?

Watching barca tonight- amazing. Talk about a fantastic club! How many of their players have come through the academy too!

Barca only get allocated a couple of hundred tickets for the game at Real. I remember them saying this in a build up to the game and they mentioned it last year as well.

When i went to Barca a few years ago we stumbled across a journalist there. We'd gone across to watch the Catalan derby at the Montjuic and this fella said that their wasn't really a culture for away fans in Spain, aprt from Malaga i think? Which was pretty much English ex-pats? I can't remember for sure.

He did say the reason why so little Barca fans went to Espanyols ground was because they didn't want to give money to their closest rivals, they'd rather they had no money from them.

Originally non-catalans where not that welcome at Barca games, so the name Espanyol (meaning Spanish) was intended to show that the club was catering for non-catalans who makes up roughly a quarter of the citys population.
Or so I was told..this have of course changed with time but is a bit similar to the secterian divide at some places.

I find this quite amazing really. I mean don't they take many to European games either? What about English fans in Europe? Are these foreign teams amazed at how many we take over?

maybe thats why they get such big gates at home ( the big clubs that is )
the fans have more spare cash to spend obviously if they dont go to away games so can eaily afford it..im lead to believe that its quite reasonably priced too in Spain.
