Bands you discovered as support acts

I saw Blackfoot back the Scorpions too,Blackfoot toured the year after on their own .
we managed to walk into the stage area at the back of the apollo near where that pub was after the gig.
I remember talking to the singer who's name i forget,I was stunned at the time that he liked Rod Stewart same as me !
Yeah, I also saw them the year after. Rickey Medlocke was the singer, used to play drums for Lynyrd Skynyrd in the early 70s and rejoined as a guitarist in the 90s - he's still a member of Skynyrd to this day.

On that subject, although I'd already discovered the late great Tom Petty by then, I went to see Bob Dylan at the NEC back in the late 1980's. First on was Roger McGuinn backed by TP & the Heartbreakers, doing old Byrds songs. Followed by TP & the Heartbreakers doing their own stuff. Followed by Dylan backed by TP & the Heartbreakers. What a gig that was and Tom & the boys really earned their money that night. Like you, I've loved Petty's music to this day. I was gutted when he passed away.
I had the pleasure of seeing TP and the Heartbreakers again in the early 80's when I lived in the south east at the time. Brighton Dome was the venue, which in those days didn't have a stage so everything was at floor level.

He was promoting his new album, Rattlesnake, and it's one of the most memorable concerts I've seen.

Standing a few feet in front of a band playing great music is a night I'll never forget.

I went to see Aerosmith in ‘93 and they had a support act who was a guitarist. “Who the fuck is Steve Vai?” I thought. He came on and did a song called For The Love Of God and just blew my mind!

So this thread is about which bands did you discover that you had never heard of previously, that you saw as a support act at a gig you attended and went on to love.
For me these four.....

James (supported The Smiths at Palace Theatre, Manchester 1985)

Inspiral Carpets (supported The Wedding Present at The Ritz, Manchester 1988)

The Thrills (supported Morrissey at Royal Albert Hall, London, 2002)

Girl In A Coma (supported Morrissey in New York / Boston 2007)

Honourable mentions to
The Comsat Angels (support to U2 at Warwick Uni 1981)
The Red Guitars (support to The Smiths at Lanchester Poly, 1984)

i was at that gig at the palace theatre, am i imagining tim booth smacking his head with a tea tray during their set??

bloody hell,you've got a good memory !
so that gig i saw leppard play was 1980 feb 3rd at belle vue, 4 days before my 15th birthday.
do you remember 1 of the guitarists strings snapped and he had to replace it with an other ?
Not a good memory a book of ticket stubs. Your memory may be better I don’t remember if he had to change a string.
