Barbados becomes a Republic

Not sure they are regaining their sovereignty, unless the island is suddenly being handed back over to the Kalinago and the carib teritory.

Saying that good luck to them, daft in this day and age that an independant Island has a head of state from a royal family on the other side of the world

so some Bajans being interviewed on the news this morning and sovereignty was mentioned - I suspect a sly dig at Brexiters who think the Queen should be retained by them and they should be grateful for her presence.......probably a slightly tongue in cheek reference

Isn't casting off a foreign monarch the literal definition of regaining sovereignty?

Depends how it is achieved. The fact that they were not prevented from doing so, is evidence that they had sovereignty already.

It’s not the same as expelling a foreign prince crowned as your king to run your country in the interests of a great power.

Just as the UK always had sovereignty for the duration it was in the EU. If we didn't they could have prevented the referendum from legally taking place, e.g. UK and Scotland indyref2 and Spain and Catalonia

Sorry, I was being a bit flippant, as the majority of modern day Barbadians will be decended from people stolen and taken into slavery and european and colonial settlers and so will have always have been from a country part of either the castilan or british kingdoms.

But in this modern day they dom't need some monarchy that has fuck all to do with them and their Island anymore, becoming a soveriegn independent state is the correct and right choice.

They became independent in 1966.

So, sad but, we were always destined to say goodbye. Lets do it as pals who chose to live in a different place. You are still pals.

Or just move here. Theres hunners a room.
I'm hoping they'll be offering a passport for anyone with a Scottish grandparent, because I'd definitely take them up on it.
