As for moving the bed around, I'm sure I've heard that you get a better night's sleep if the bed is aligned east-west, rather than north-south. Something to do with the rotation of the earth. Alternatively, you could get blind drunk every night. That tends to assist with getting to sleep.
 
Try a memory foam topper which you put on top of your mattress, they're about three inches thick and are really comfy. If you like it you can then splash out on a full one , the toppers are about £90 and are well worth it.
I've had one for a couple of years now.

Maybe the fact that you've gone away for a few days is the reason behind the improved sleep? I'm summising you're on a mini-holiday?
