My wife visited Manchester with me two years ago, first time she had ever been to England. We went to the Yang Sing in the TC, a lad working there at the time was Malaysian but he did speak Mandarin, my wife asked him why they sell 'Chinese food' which clearly isn't Chinese. His answer was along the lines of 'we know, but this is how people like it here'.
A few days later my daughter took us to a takeaway in Astley, that was fun. we're all standing in the queue, my wife gets her turn, the lass behind the counter asks me if my wife speaks Mandarin or Cantonese, the answer being Mandarin. The lass tries to talk to my wife to figure out what she wants, after a minute or so she calls a guy out of the kitchen who did speak Mandarin. My wife eventually got what the ever it was she asked for. I'm next in line, asked for 'Steak and Kidney pudding, chips peas & gravy, the lad that had been talking to my wife in Mandarin stuck his head round the kitchen door and said to me 'now that I can do!' it was quite funny at the time.
