Ones I can remember from opposition players are Berbatov for spurs Barry for Villa, Carrick and Jenas running midfield for Spurs, Sherringham for Portsmouth, Samways for Spurs, Merson for Arsenal and Gary Neville last derby at Maine Road :)

Ali Benarbia v Birmingham City.
Stunning. Simply stunning. Wasn't expecting it so that's why it's the best.

Gazza v us at Tottenham, opening day of the season at WHL and he was sensational.

Lineker v us at GP, he bagged a hat-trick that night, and was electric.

Berkovic v the rags in the 3-1.

Paul Simpson v Huddersfield in the 10-1.

Paul Stewart in the league cup v Forest, the guy was a monster that night against Cloughies at the time, brilliant team.

-- Sun Oct 06, 2013 9:35 pm --

one of the best individual performances and debut , was trevor francis at stoke city , i think we won 3-1 , and he scored 2 superb goals and took our team to another level that day , i remember thinking at £1m , (£80m in todays money) he was the bargain of the century.
I remember that one, god what a player he was.

Wanchope was one of the best individual City performances I've seen. Weaver against Ipswich is a good call. Berbatov against us for Tottenham but I remember being blown away by Jurgen Klinsmann in the 5-2 game and Domitrscu was bloody good that day. I remember Peter Barnes getting a 10/10 one game can't recall who against though and Denis Tueart v Notts County one evening game I think when he scored 3 or was it 4?

4 goals for " dennis the menace" that night..and my local paper had the obvious headline, which i,ve still got safely tucked away with other memorabilia...dave bennet got the other one that night.

Paulo wanchope must be the best performance i have seen in the flesh( didn,t know you were there that night josh..is that when you used to go away..? arf arf

ali b at sheff wed must run paulo a close second.what a player.
#david white and his four goal haul at villa park on a tues night under peter reid was special too.

i have a vague memory of richard edghill having a cracking game at left back at elland road one night match, all a bit a hazy now and no idea why he was at left back..

i am not kinkladze,s biggest fan but his performance , at home to spurs on his debut for us was magical..i remember it was the 86th minute before he misplaced a pass.

i have a feeling we won 2-1

but check the Bluemoon Stats section to find out

platt was very very good that night..he was playing on the back of his italia 90 performance with england when his name had just become big time..his confidence back in the domestic league took his game onto another level. we still beat the villans tho.

-- Sun Oct 06, 2013 10:13 pm --

Keith curle debut against liverpool at home. First match of the season.

Was that when saunder missed a penalty at the platt lane end?

It was. David white scored that goal off the underside of the bar and we won 2-1. Pretty sure it was mcmanaman and saunders debuts as well. I was only young but remember the atmosphere was incredible and one of those nights you never forget
yep . mcmanaman debut..scored with a diving header at platt lane end. mike marsh, a tidy midfield player also started for the scousers that day.

as you say, the atmosphere on the kippax that night was electric..the noise was incredible, everyone was up for it and you could just sense that city were gonna pull it off..cant think of too many nights better than that one..football in those days , as a spectator, was different class. i miss those days, and would do anything to have packed terracing back. happy days.

Here's the goals from Denis thanks to Mad Eyed Screamer's pm earlier and quite rightly you can see one of my favourite City players Dave Bennett scoring the first.

Yes mate those were the days when I could afford to go away, before I had a wife and kids, a mortgage and cats, a car and a job that paid on time rather than my own business whereby every fucker pays late and yes the days before I paid mobile phone bills ;-)

Off topic mate I saw a lovely Jay last Saturday morning flying up into a tree and it just sat there for ages whilst I sat in the van and enjoyed it's beauty....Anyway here's the goals.

I was delighted when we signed Christie, but gutted Lillis went the other way to Derby.

I seem to recall Tueart having a blinder against Newcastle during his first spell with us.

The first performance that I thought of was Weaver v Ipswich.

Didn't see Ali B at Weds but his debut was memorable: so good that you just knew he would get us promoted.

Darren Huckerby at Maine Road - might have been against Millwall but I seem to remember we were down to 10 men & Huckerby seemed to play full-back and Striker at the same time. He put so much effort in that after about 70 mins he ran over to the touchline in front of the Kippax and threw-up. Not the most skillful or creative appearance, but he gave everything in that game.
Yes. Exactly my thoughts from the Kippax.

Agreed he was superb that night.

Ones I remember was Quinn away to forest when we hadn't won away on a Saturday for ages. Forest had a good home record and we went there and got a nice 3 - 1 win....Quinn was unplayable that afternoon.

Another one that I recall is Aguero vs rags in FA cup 3 rd. again vs 10 men. He was like 2 players that day and shone when he could have easily strolled through last 60 mins.

Vs us.....Steve bloody cherry for notts county in FA cup where we somehow lost after battering them all game.....something died inside me that day.....

Peter Barnes ' 10 out of 10 ' was given in ' The News of The World '.................c.1977 v. Tottenham at Maine Road; not sure how many he scored but he chipped Pat Jennings. 5 - 0; think we might have relegated them but they were on their way, anyway. Tueart - yes; 4 verses Notts County in The League Cup about 1980 or 81.

Best performances - Edin v. Tottenham - 1 - 5. Not only for the goals but his all round contribution. Trevor Francis - most of his games..................genius................

Steve Cherry still haunts me from that day, he was incredible. Not been a regular away supported but that day was probably my worst for some strange reason.

More recently how about Mario v Salford in the cup semi. Brilliant performance from him (underlining just what he could do, when in the mood and right mindset).
He played lone striker in that game, and he plays to his full potential when played alone up top, as he does for Italy and Milan. We should've used him as a lone striker far more often IMO.

Ruud Gullit for Chelsea at Maine Road 1995
Chris Waddle for Bradford 1996
Kinkladze v Oxford at the Manor Ground 1997
Kinkladze v Middlesbrough 1998
Merson for Villa at Maine Road 2001
Zola at Maine Road 2002
Henry (and the entire Arsenal team) at Maine Road 2003
David James at Stamford Bridge 2005
Joe Hart at Spurs 2010
David Silva against Villa at home 2010
Joe Hart V Dortmund 2012
Kompany V the rags this season
Schweinsteiger last week

Away from City, I was fortunate enough to see Villa play Inter Milan at Villa Park in a UEFA Cup tie in 1990, the autumn after the World Cup in Italy. The Inter side was dominated by Italian internationals such as Walter Zenga, Giuseppe Bergomi, Ricardo Ferri, Nicola Berti, and Aldo Serena, as well as three of the best players in the world at the time from the German World Cup winning squad, Andreas Brehme, Jurgen Klinsmann, and probably the player of the tournament in Lothar Matthaus.

Villa were a decent side who'd finished runners-up in the first division the previous season under Graham Taylor, and had players like McGrath, Cowans, Daley and David Platt, but Inter were huge favourites.

Performance of the night, possibly one of the best midfield displays I've ever seen live, came from Villa's Paul Birch, whose job was to man-mark Matthaus.

Matthaus didn't get a kick all night. The term "had him in his pocket" might have been invented for this occasion. Roared on by a hostile 40+ thousand crowd, Villa outfought and outplayed Inter. Cowans pulled the strings and they couldn't handle the pace of Tony Daley. Villa won 2-0 with goals from a thunderous Kent Nielsen volley and a neat finish from Platt, and Daley had a good goal disallowed, but none of it would have happened if Birch hadn't done a job on Matthaus. He didn't resort to kicking him, just followed him everywhere and beat him to most balls. He wasn't the most technically gifted, but was a damn hard worker and the epitome of professionalism.

Predictably, Inter won the second leg 3-0.

Birch went on to play for Wolves after more than ten years at Villa before dying of bone cancer in his mid-forties.

I feel the need to add RIP.

I'm sure we have had a similar thread before.

Anyway I will once again go for Artthur Mann, early seventies not sure now who the opposition was could have been WHU but it really was a 10/10 performance, marauding up and down the wing like a man pocessed.

Also Nelly vs Spurs, the famous ballet on ice game.
