Best player we brought in on loan or free?

Liverpool and United have brought in several loan players and free transfer players in recent seasons. In a chat with a fellow Blue we struggled to think of the last time we brought a main player in on a loan. Think Lampard and Patrick Viera were frees? Any others? And if so who has been the best one?

Lampard was a loan, prior to him David Pizarro for an outfield player. Carson is here on loan now I believe. Lampard the best for impact and piss boiling.

Had Carson down but is not a really a main player
Think Fulop on emergency loan before them when Given bust his shoulder. Vieira the only free since the takeover to the best of my knowledge. We had the chance to sign Pizarro on a free but didn't take it.
Yeah don't get our obsession with shite elderly keepers given the stable of talent we have in that regard.

We had the max of squad players in for a long time - so no room to pick up any bargains. Hence there will be very few, certainly foreign players that came here on a free. Pizarro was the last foreign player i can think off.

Pizarro was a classy player, a pity he was towards the end of his career when we brought him in as a backup.

There was also the freebie that got away (for a while) - some useless midfielder called Guardiola who turned down playing for Stuart Pearce - or the other way round.

Never wanted him anyway.
We've had a few chances to wait a bit longer and save on a transfer fee (Nasri, Gundogan spring to mind but haven't needed to and so chose not to) think Wright and Taylor were frees.
