Best War Films

not a film but, band of brothers is one of the most impressive war programs ever!
quality series.

Definately Band of Brothers, you can get the boxset on play.com for around 15 quid. Best war series I've seen, the way it's produced and the acting is of the highest quality. It's a series of 10, 1 hour long episodes.....As far as films go for me it's Saving Private Ryan.
Glad no one on here has suggested Valkyrie....thought that was terrible, but might be alone in that!

Band of Brothers.
Saving Ryans Privates
Catch 22

And one that I enjoyed as it was quite realistic as far as being part of a Bomber crew is Memphis Belle. I even had my own luck elastic band during GW1.

kanal by wadja (1957) is pretty bleak, it follows the polish resistance in warsaw and their annihilation by the nazis. the last part of the film is them attempting to escape through the shit filled sewers. not a film to watch if you need cheering up.

the other night i watched assembly by xiaogang feng (2007) which i think is one of chinese cinema's first big budget war films and starts in the hcinese civil war in 1948, goes a bit into the korean war and then the aftermath. the first hour is all actual and is pretty brutal, think saving private ryan but worse. the second half is alright i suppose, just the main guys attempts to put the record straight after the war. if you like things being shot and blown up then i highly recommend it.

a really good film i watched a few weeks ago is army of shadows by melville (1969) and is a french film about the french resistance in ww2. not much in the way of set battles and things being blown up but a very good film anyway.

The Pianist
Das Boot
Apocalypse Now
The Deer Hunter
Tora! Tora! Tora!
