It's nice to have a 3-1 lead in Europe and await the return home leg, but how many City fans are aware that we have blown it before?
When football resumed after World War Two, the FA Cup was contested again on a two-leg basis in 1945-46. City had beaten Barrow in the third round and, having then been drawn at Bradford PA (not Bradford City) we duly won the first leg 3-1. The return game at Maine Road was seen as something of a formality, but on a rain-soaked pitch Bradford won 8-2 (9-5 on aggregate). They had a genius playing for them called Len Shackleton, who could make the ball talk and later that year scored six goals on debut for Newcastle after being transferred there.
I am not suggesting that similar complacency will occur again, merely that nothing is certain in this game. Nor am I aware that we have ever conceded eight goals at home in a competitive match before or since.
And now Bradford Park Avenue are in the umpteenth level of the football pyramid and playing in the Sellotape league or some such (can't be bothered looking it up). Part of our history to be forgotten....
