Unless I’m going mad, there were no on screen replays tonight. As I searched my phone and telly earlier for replays of tonight’s goals, it occurred to me that I’ve almost forgotten that old fashioned feeling of having seeing a great goal live and then you either have to wait eagerly all night to see it again on Match of The Day, or (pre-sky) never even see it again apart from in your memory.

Now I’m confused. Was there a malfunction tonight or, as I now suspect, are replays not allowed in champions league games? I’ve been to pretty much every home champions league game we’ve ever played, and a number of aways, and this has never crossed my mind before.

Never are in the CL.

I can’t believe I have never noticed this before. Why are they not allowed? Same reason that we weren’t allowed a beer until last season? Because UEFA are a bunch of knobbeads?
I assume so. Scared of repercussions, I guess.

You just get the edited highlights at half time.

What bullshit. But there is something nice about having to wait hours or days to see a goal again, and it’s interesting to see how well you did take them in whilst watching live. I noticed tonight that both goals looked better on the replays than they did in my memory.

My first takes were, wow, Stones, didn’t expect that, is their keeper a hologram.

Wow, why doesn’t Haaland head the ball at 7 feet in the air, that’s mad, but what a ball from Cancelo.

I can’t see any of the screens from my seat so wouldn’t have a clue what’s on them. But talking of daft UEFA rules, all the beer pumps at the bar had black stickers on them facing outwards, so unless you were a regular you’d have no idea what they were serving. I asked the girl if they’d been left on by mistake or something and she said no, it’s a UEFA rule that there can’t be any advertising for any beer other than Heineken.

Also noticed UEFA branded merch and "Official" UEFA half-and-half scarfs all over the stores..

Just thought as well. I got to my seat just before the minute's silence but I didn't hear the UEFA "anthem" either last night. did I miss it or did they cancel it?

They cancelled it. I believe in line with their not allowing our National Anthem to be played.

Joke of an organisation.

Back when we were in league 1 / 2 you would be lucky to see the goals at all. If some kid made a debut in an away match you wouldn't really know how they played unkless you spoke to someone who was there.

Certainly that was the case in the 80s but I think, when we went down in the 90s, we'd reached the era where you would see the goals on the next day's news or Granada football show. Then you'd buy the end of season video and Alistair Mann had dubbed a commentary on retrospectively. But yeah, you'd never see the game again. Being live on telly was a big deal in itself.

These days every team in the football league has highlights on their youtube channels on the day of the game

That's obviously a safety measure, absolutely nothing to do with money.

Like you say, I was excited to get home and see the replays, it would have been nice to have them on the big screen though.

Also, the Heineken advert on the big screen can piss off.
About that advert…
Why are we obligated to show these adverts, particularly the YNWA nonsense. I get they’re UEFA sponsors, but what happens at Anfield, OT or any other ground that doesn’t have big screens. Can we say they’re out of order next time ;-)

Pretty much all the advertising (and other media content) at CL games is determined by UEFA and clubs have no say in the matter. If a club has big screens and wants to use them, it has to toe the line. It’s just an extension of the oversized pitch side advertising hoardings that have been in place at CL games since before the screens became commonplace.
Unfortunately there’s just too much dosh involved for clubs to rebel and not do what the evil UEFA paymasters dictate. And even if a club did decide to take a stand, not complying would no doubt have dramatic consequences.
