Black barrister mistaken for defendant three times

More unconscious bias than a systemic problem. What happened there is a set of individuals in a particular setting with unconscious bias
It's the unconscious bias that's a problem as well as out and out racism.
I think we all have UB but only for a split second, then the brain kicks in and we realise and act according to our thought process'.

Yeah. Feel for her. The exhaustion she, and others, must feel having to continually justify your existence purely on the basis of the colour of your skin.

I also felt it would be nice to express at least one post of sympathy towards her on the thread :)

Exhausting is the right word. It's weird that people would try and deflect over semantics rather than just acknowledge there's a problem here.

The refusal to acknowledge the bleeding obvious is the theme of the last few years.

Wholly agree. This example wasnt a systemic issue though, that was the point I was making

It does when you are aware of your own bias or the need to question your own attitudes - essentially what unconscious bias training is about. Until we are educated to understand that we ALL have some bias and preconceived ideas we will not learn to challenge them and the brain 'kick in' as you describe.
Let's face it if you have one pound coin in your pocket and there are three homeless guys in a doorway - one in a city top, one in a Liverpool top and one in a rag top, whose getting the quid? In my case none of them because I'm tight - no bias there;-)

indeed, including the unconscious bias that a couple of honest mistakes based on numerous factual observations and personal experiences in their lives must be evidence of systemic racism and that innocent, tolerant, law-abiding people in this country who just want to get on with their lives on merit and rescue the economy have to be beaten round the head with yet another "you're all racist" accusation. But here we are again...

An interesting point - to automatically herd people into the racist category can in itself be a form of UB based upon assumptions.
