We've had a 5.1 surround setup fpr some years now, and have had Bowers & Wilkins speakers but unfortunately the left and centre speaker have recently blown!!
Looking at a replacement (they don't do our model anymore) the cheapest I could find was £350 for the 686 s2 600 series (to replace the left speaker) and £350 for the HTM62 600 series (to replace the centre speaker).

I wanted to stick with Bowers & Wilkins because the audio precision is top quality, I would say from personal experience only Bose have come close to the sound quality. Unfortunately £700 for 2 speakers is pulling my pants down, so I was wondering if there's any techies out there that could recommend some decent home thearter speakers.

If your other 3 speakers are b&w, you may find buying alternative manufacturer unbalances the overall sound. Is there a reason you are blowing your speakers - is your av amp behaving? How old is it? Would be a shame to invest in new speakers if you have an underlying problem. If you haven't, I would stick with B&W - good audiophile brand.

Got 1 B&W speaker left.... had the speakers for about 20 years (since I was a kid anyway) my dad replaced the rear speakers with mission speakers after the rear speakers blew, and I know what you mean about the sound imbalance, the rear sound isn't half as good as what the front sound was.

I'm using a Onekyo 9.2 PR-SC5509 preamp, have been for about 10 years now. The first speaker just smoked and went, then last night when watching the game the left speaker started popping and now it just crackles.

Onkyo are really good - however you say its a pre-amp. Are you using a power amp as well? I am on my 4th AV amp in 10 years. If it were me, I would take your amp/s into a specialist HiFi to get checked - they shouldn't charge more than £10/£20 to test it. My guess is thats what is frying your speakers. If it is your amp, you may need to start from scratch mate - a reasonable av amp will cost £350 - £500. New 5.1 speaker sets around the same. Getting 10-20 years out of your old system is pretty bloody good - maybe time to reinvest.

Got a pair of Mourdant short 206 floorstanders looking for a good home. Too powerful for my little house.

I've got a Roksan Kandy power amp!! Reckon it could be that? I'll try and get it tested out... I'll have to start saving up now I guess!

Hi all. Sorry to hijack the thread. I have an old Technics amp that stopped working about 15 years ago. It's been in my loft ever since.
Can anyone recommend somewhere that would have a look at it?
Edit I am in Gorton

Phone a couple of hi fi dealers. They will be able to recommend for sure.

Op are you saying you have blown up two lots of speakers?
I would get The amp looked at if true!

It could be something simple such as a fuse on the DC side of the power supply. DC fuses sit somewhere around the transformer and are usually little glass tubes which sit in a holder and can be easily removed. You should be able to see the fuse wire running through them; if not, the fuse is blown. The rating should be stamped on one of the end caps.
