Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 27 - Out on blue 6 - Gone Too Soon (pg 438)

Animals playlist

Of the 67 tracks, I enjoyed probably about 60! The main thing this playlist did was remind of how many artists I like but don’t listen to as much as I should. Too many of them to list but honourable mentions to: (earlier) REM, Jethro Tull, Dr John, Belle and Sebastian, Martyn Joseph and Mogwai.

Also nice to see Bert Jansch getting a bit of love, someone I’ve toyed with for the album thread.

Of the ones I was unfamiliar with I liked A Perfect Circle (heard of but not what I was expecting them to sound like), Rilo Kiley, Jim White and Broadcast.

And finally I think based on not being at all fussed about that big hit he had, I have never taken any interest in Bruce Hornsby but I think I should probably investigate him.

These playlists are too big to properly process but I really don’t think that matters as they are producing decent quantities of great songs to listen to.

Not really the best example of what A Perfect Circle spund like, as a song or even that album. So your expectation might not be that misplaced.

Are we putting forward the song that 'borrows', and naming the one it borrows from for general awareness?

I.e the playlist will be entirely of the later songs, but we look up the prior ones for ourselves?

I think there was a similar thread in its own right, if I have understood it properly. Will still put forward ones I like, as OB1 has.

edit, also how obvious does it have to be, an outright sampling or something that sounds similar to us, but might not necessarily to everyone hearing it.
You can put forward the borrower or borrowee. I mixed it up.

Do name the other song.

I think it should be obvious. I think the one’s I put forward are.

I’ve added the track “Rock Baby” by Moxy, whose riff bears a resemblance to Ted Nugent’s “Stormtroopin’”. Bit of trivia, The Moxy album that features “Rock Baby” was co-produced by Eddie “Hairdresser” Leonetti. Eddie came over to the UK and produced an album for my best friends’ band before he quit music to be an LA hairstylist!

The Big Winner

"Kingfisher" - Bert Jansch and Marin Jenkins

A name I've heard before but never listened to his music. I always assumed he was some American or German jazz guitarist (for some reason). On the back of this outstanding track, I listened to all of the Avocet album, which I enjoyed immensely

Best of the list that I hadn't previously heard:-

"Dog's Got a Bone" - The Beta Band. After their recent appearance on a playlist, I also enjoyed this track.
"How to be a Werewolf" - Mogwai - a pleasant instrumental
"Moorhen" - Lau - Nice bit of folk
"Porcupine" - Echo & The Bunnymen - Quite melodious for an 80s UK indie band

Tracks I knew but enjoyed listening to again:-

"Albatross" - Fleetwood Mac - For some reason, I had the urge to buy a luxury chocolate pudding from M & S after hearing this.
"Werewolves of London" - Warren Zevon
"Elephant" - Jason Isbell - One of the standout tracks from an album we've already reviewed on the Album Club thread
"Disturbance at the Heron House" - R.E.M.
"Monkey Dead" - Sunhouse - Another great track from another album we've already reviewed on the Album Club thread

I also enjoyed:-

The two Jethro Tull tracks, the two Ted Nugent tracks, the two Pink Floyd tracks

"Butterfly" - The Pale
"Dolphins Make Me Cry" - Martyn Joseph
I finally finished the Animals playlist.

Interesting mix although quite a few tracks didn’t grab me.

TBH my favourite tracks were the ones I suggested (surprise).

Others I liked a lot included:

"Bluebird" - Buffalo Springfield
"Butterfly" - Susan Tedeschi
"The Dragonfly Queen" - And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
"Land: Horses" - Patti Smith
"The Fish" - Yes
"How Come My Dog Don't Bark" - Dr.John
"Cats in the Cradle" - Harry Chapin - I did know the origin of the Ugly Kid Joe version.

And I just love “Werewolves of London” and “Fly Like an Eagle”.

For that song you can probably create an onward chain into the future too. House of Pain sing the I don't have a gun line in one of theirs but I imagine there's loads of tracks that take from it.

Good idea!

For today then, Adam's Song - Bink182

Borrows the line from that song 'take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours don't be late' with their own 'I took my time, I hurried up, the choice was mine, I didn't think enough'.
