Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 27 - Out on blue 6 - Gone Too Soon (pg 438)

Not sure how young 35 was in the 18th century?

Now George Gershwin at 38 in the 20th century, that was a shocker.

I suppose I was looking at it more as 'too soon' rather than 'too young'. In terms of where they were and what they had to offer.

Chris Cornell would have been too young to die, at age 52, but musically you can argue his prime was behind him. Which I wouldn't say for Mozart. Or the others I have put forward. I also avoided musicians that have been replaced in their bands, for that reason.

I considered No Rain. But given the tone, went off their final album
That's a great call, most all know "No Rain", which is still their only track played extensively on FM 'classic' and satellite radio today to the omission of most all other songs.

Something lesser known that others haven't heard is the way I'm also thinking on a well known artist/group.

Mouth full of cavities - Blind Melon
(2001 digital remaster, preferably)

Liked them back in the day. Shannon Hoon died of an oversose on tour, aged 28, in 1995.
Musical memory:

1993: I heard "No Rain" for the first time on MTV whilst staying at in my in-laws apartment in Tenerife. Bought the album on my return home.

1995: Sitting on the balcony of the same apartment, I read in Q Magazine that Shannon Hoon had died.

Eh, I hate suspense too. From the well known and classic band that was gone too soon by lead singer Jim Morrison joining the '27 club' through many years of demons and excessive living (I'll leave it at that), this is one of my favourites of theirs, maybe not as well known.

Released on their final album, this song was not a single. The song title refers to the American Indian symbol of peace and good luck. Morrison said the song captures the concerns of 1960s America, including warfare, civil rights struggles, and countercultural movements. How fitting even today as next Tuesday approaches...

"Peace Frog" - The Doors

Good point, it does apply to Gershwin too. Shannon Hoon is a good example, they tried but didn't manage to recover from his demise.

I’ve seen Crowded House live several times but only once in their original trio format. The chemistry between Neil Finn, Nick Seymour and the late Paul Hester was superb, both in their playing and between-song banter.

Before the concert at the Apollo in March 1992, I met the three of them at an in-store event in HMV on Market Street. They played a few songs there and it is a great musical memory.

It seems right to nominate one of the few songs Paul Hester wrote and actually sang lead vocals on.

“Italian Plastic” - Crowded House

Nice story. Glad it's evoked a happy memory

There's too many from Jim Croce to Ian Curtis (would a continued Joy Division have mutated into New Order anyway?). So for my last one I'm going for a slightly oblique and sad two for one.

Tammi Terrell died at just 24 years old and it's said that Marvin Gaye never really got over her death.

Terrell and Gaye made some of the great soul duets, she was Gaye's musical soulmate and he was distraught with a number of his associates suggesting it was a major contributor to his slide into depression and addiction. It's also been speculated that Gaye Jnrs addictions clouded his judgement in providing Gaye Snr with the Smith & Wesson that he would ultimately kill his own son with. So one gone at just 24 and maybe indirectly precipitating the others death at only 44.

You're All I Need To Get By - Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

A great song this

A great song this

I think their chemistry just hits you in the face.

It's a very poignant song too though, Terrell had already had two brain operations when they recorded this. 12 months after the recording he was performing the song live with Carla Thomas and Terrell was on the front row by now confined to a wheelchair. Terrell started signing along and Gaye came down from the stage with a mic and finished the song with Tammi. It was the last time she sang in public and she died less than a year later I think.

In some ways Terrell's mum held Motown responsible for her daughters death. The only person connected to Motown that she allowed to attend the funeral was Marvin as she felt he'd tried to look out for Tammi.

I like to think that somewhere in another dimension they are singing together!
